2000-23811 RES0 Incomplete RESOLUTION NO. 2000-23811 A RESOLUTION OF THE MA YORAND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, ACCEPTING THE AWARD OF A GRANT, IN THE AMOUNT OF $93,320.00, FOR THE PERIOD OF FEBRUARY 1,2000, TO JANUARY 31, 2001, FROM THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE, HIGH INTENSITY DRUG TRAFFICKING PROGRAM (HIDT A), FOR THE CONTINUATION OF THE ADMINISTRATION AND OPERATION OF A MONEY LAUNDERING TASKFORCE; FURTHER AUTHORIZING THE MA YORAND CITY CLERK TO EXECUTE ALL APPROPRIATE CONTRACTS AND AUTHORIZING THE BUDGETING AND EXPENDITURE OF GRANT FUNDS. WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach Police Department has been awarded a grant, in the amount of$93,320.00, from the United States Department of Justice, High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDT A) Program; and WHEREAS, the grant funds will be used to fund the continuation of the administration and operations of a Task Force that will be targeting money laundering, started last year, and will be composed of personnel from the Miami Beach Police Department, Internal Revenue Service, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and the City of Miami and City of North Miami Beach Police Departments; and WHEREAS, the grant will fund for expenses for rent, repair and maintenance for office equipment, internet connections, data base services (Equifax and Info America) and office supplies; and WHEREAS, the grant is for the period of February 1,2000, to January 31,200 I, with no matching funds required by the City. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Comm ission herein accept the award of a grant, in the amount of $93,320.00, for the period of February 1, 2000, to January 31,2001, from the United States Department of Justice, High Intensity Drug Trafficking Program (HIDT A), for the continuation of the administration and operation of a money laundering task force, and authorizing the Mayor and City Clerk to execute all appropriate contracts, as well as the budgeting and expenditure of grant funds. ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION Adopt the Resolution. ANALYSIS The Miami Beach Police Department has been awarded a grant by the United States Department of Justice, High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDT A) Program, to continue to administer and operate a Money Laundering Task Force that was established last year. The Task Force is composed of personnel from the Miami Beach Police Department, the Internal Revenue Service, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the City of Miami Police Department, and the North Miami Beach Police Department. The grant award is $93,320, for the period of February 1, 2000 to January 31, 2001. The grant will fund the continued administration and operation of this task force which will specifically target money laundering. The Task Force will be located in the City of Miami Beach. The grant will fund for expenses for rent, repair and maintenance for office equipment, internet connections, data base services (Equifax and Info America) and office supplies. There are no matching funds required from the City. DATE C7N 2.-2'3..00 AGENDA ITEM Money laundering is a serious crime in our community. Recognizing this, HIDT A is funding this specialized Task Force. The use of this Task Force will likely result in an increased amount of money forfeited to the agencies involved. The Administration recommends that the Mayor and City Commission adopt this Resolution in order to allow the Police Department to continue the administration and operation of this Task Force which benefits all of the citizens of Miami-Dade County.
