SUBJECT: BIKE TO WORK WEEK
The purpose of this LTC is to provide you with information about the Bike to Work Week events that
will be held during the week of March 6-11, 2006. Bike to Work Week is a national event founded in
1956 by the League of American Bicyclists. Its purpose is to promote bicycling as an alternative
mode of transportation and to recruit individuals as regular bicycle commuters.
In observance of Bike to Work Week, representatives from South Florida Commuter Services (SFCS)
and the City's Bicycle Program Coordinator will present information about the benefits of bicycle
commuting and the importance of bicycle safety to City of Miami Beach employees and residents
throughout various locations in the City. Information will also be provided on th& City's new Bicycle
Program and current and future projects that will help make Miami Beach more bicycle friendly.

The SFCS and the Miami Beach Bicycle Center will offer City employees who complete a survey on
commuting a chance to win a $375 gift certificate to the Miami Beach Bicycle Center for a new
bicycle, helmet, and lock. The survey will be available at the info tables during Bike to Work Week,
online at www. 1800234ride.com, and will be distributed to employee mailboxes. The winner of the
raffle will be announced on Monday, March 13, 2006. The information gained from the survey will
help determine if bicycle commuting is a viable option for City employees, and what is needed to help
make it a safe option.
The Florida Bicycle Association will also hold a Safe Cycling for Adults Workshop to teach bicyclists
how to safely operate their bicycles in a variety of situations, including how to legally and safely ride in
traffic and how to prevent accidents with crash-avoidance techniques. The workshop will be held at
the Flamingo Park P.A.L. Center, Community Room on March 11,2006 from 10-2pm.
