A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, REQUESTING THE MIAMI-DADE COUNTY
MAYOR AND COMMISSION TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE FUNDING TO
FULFILL THE COUNTY'S MATCHING FUND OBLIGATIONS FOR
PLANNED SHORE PROTECTION AND BEACH RENOURISHMENT
PROJECTS FOR YEARS 2000 THROUGH 2003; AND TO RECOGNIZE
THE CRITICAL NEED FOR ESTABLISHING A LONG-TERM DEDICATED
FUNDING SOURCE.
WHEREAS, South Florida's beaches are an important part of the quality of life of
this community, providing aesthetic, environmental, hurricane mitigation and recreational
benefits for our residents and tourists; and
WHEREAS, beaches continue to be Florida's number one tourist attraction and are
thus vital to our economic well-being, generating over $9 billion in beach-related sales
annually and contributing to a ripple effect to the Florida economy of over $16 billion; and
and
WHEREAS, beach erosion continues to be a major problem in Miami-Dade County;
WHEREAS, the Federal and State Legislatures have appropriated their proportional
share of funds to continue the Miami-Dade County Beach Erosion Control Program; and
WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County currently has a deficit of approximately
$10,000,000 in its share of funds for beach management projects scheduled for 2000
through 2003; and
WHEREAS,the Miami-Dade County Commission has historically demonstrated a
commitment to the preservation of Region's beaches, and now must recognize the critical
environmental and economic need to identify the necessary funds to ensure there is no
delay in the restoration and maintenance of our beaches.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, THAT:
The Mayor and City Commission of the City of Miami Beach requests that the
Miami-Dade County Mayor and Commission provide adequate annual funding to
carry out a County wide Comprehensive Beach Management Program to protect
and restore the County's beaches, and consider the Department of Environmental
Resources Management's 2000-01 budget request of $6.416 million.
The Mayor and City Commission of the City of Miami Beach requests that the
Miami-Dade County Mayor and Commission give serious consideration to the
identification and dedication of a fair and stable source of long-term funding to fully
implement a County wide Beach Management Program for preserving and restoring
Miami-Dade's threatened sandy beaches.

OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, THAT:
The Council of Coastal Mayors requests that the Miami-Dade County Mayor and
Commission provide adequate annual funding to carry out a County wide Comprehensive
Beach Management Program to protect and restore the County's beaches, and consider the
Department of Environmental Resources Management's 2000-01 budget request of $6.416
million for planned beach renourishment and shore protection projects in Bal Harbour, Key
Biscayne, Miami Beach and Sunny Isles Beach.
The Council of Coastal Mayors requests that the Miami-Dade County Mayor and
Commission give serious consideration to the identification and dedication of a fair and
stable source of long-term funding to fully implement a Beach Management Program to
preserve and restore the threatened sandy beaches of Miami-Dade County's Coastal
Municipalities; Bal Harbour, Key Biscayne, Miami Beach, Sunny Isles and Surfside.
