RESOLUTION NO. 2000-23877
A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI
BEACH, FLORIDA URGING THE MIAMI-
DADE COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC
WORKS AND THE UNITED STATES COAST
GUARD TO REQUIRE THAT ALL CAUSEWAY
BRIDGES IN THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH BE
OPENED NO MORE FREQUENTLY THAN
ONE TIME PER HOUR ON THE HOUR.
WHEREAS, extensive improvements to the Venetian Causeway and its bridges have been
recently completed thereby making the causeway and its bridges fully operational to the public; and
WHEREAS, the Venetian Causeway is the only means of ingress and egress for the
residents on the Venetian Islands; and
WHEREAS, in order to provide effective means of egress and ingress on and off the
Venetian Causeway and its residential islands in cases of emergency and to otherwise ensure the
efficient flow of traffic, the opening of the east and west bridges on the Venetian Causeway should
be limited; and
WHEREAS, the frequent opening schedules for other bridges in the City of Miami Beach,
in particular, the 63rd Street and 71st Street bridges, cause significant delays and impediments to the
free flow of traffic on a daily basis during peak traffic hours and during special events in the City;
and
WHEREAS, in the interests of the public health, welfare, and safety, all bridges in the City
of Miami Beach should be opened no more frequently than one time per hour on the hour; and
WHEREAS, the Miami-Dade County Department of Public Works controls the operation
of the bridges in the City of Miami Beach; and
WHEREAS, the United States Coast Guard dictates the opening practices for bridges in
Biscayne Bay.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that in the interests of the
public health, welfare, and safety, the Miami-Dade County Department of Public Works and the
United States Coast Guard are hereby urged to require that all bridges within the City of Miami
Beach be opened no more frequently than one time per hour on the hour.
