2000-23910 RESO RESOLUTION NO. 2000-23910 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION TO WAIVE JACKIE GLEASON THEATER RENTAL CHARGES OF $1,000 FOR THE COMMUNITY CRUSADE AGAINST DRUGS EVENT, TO BE HELD MAY 10,2000, AT THE JACKIE GLEASON THEATER. WHEREAS, on May 10, 2000, Community Crusade Against Drugs, a not-for-profit organization has contracted for the Jackie Gleason Theater to present the musical Safety Kids - Play It Smart, Stay Safe From Drugs; and WHEREAS, this event will educate children and parent informing them of the dangers inherent with drug abuse; and WHEREAS, the organizers of the event have requested a waiver of the $1,000 not-for-profit organization rental rate for the Jackie Gleason Theater. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT DUL Y RESOL VED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that the Mayor and City Commission herein waive Jackie Gleason Theater rental charges of $1,000 for the Community Crusade Against Drugs event, to be held May 10, 2000, at the Jackie Gleason Theater. ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION: This event is designed to educate local children and parents about the dangers of drug use, therefore, the Administration recommends approval of the Resolution. ANAL YSIS: Community Crusade Against Drugs, a not-for-profit organization, has contracted for the Jackie Gleason Theater to present on May 10, 2000 the musical Safety Kids - Play It Smart, Stay Safe From Drugs. The play is an educational vehicle for children and parents informing them of the dangers inherent with drug abuse, and presents the message in an informative, contemporary manner appealing to the youth. The Convention Center Advisory Board ("CCAB") does not have authority to review and recommend for a reduction of rental fees for the Jackie Gleason Theater, therefore, this request has not come before the CCAB. The event sponsors have been afforded the Theater's $1,000 not-for- profit organizational rate, a reduction from the commercial rate of$3,000. The Community Crusade Against Drugs is requesting waiver of the not-for-profit rate of$l,OOO for the use at the Jackie Gleason Theater.
