Something else that will be different this year, according to Houston, Is the involvement
'f some of the perents in the actual production. "The objective of bringing parents on stage
>> to emphasize that they have a responsibility of teaching children about the harm of using
lrugs and that chi~ren have a responsibility to their parents to do the right thingi, said
louston. .parents and children must work together as a unit."
The four Aerformances, which will b. held throughout the county, are free and

"'We are encouraging teachers to use this as a field trip and the public to come out
nd support these students. They are taking leading roles not only In this production but
Iso In the community by putting themselves on stage," explains Tyrone K. Back@rs, CCAD's
xecutlve director who has sponsored this anti-drug full-scale performance for the past 12
'ears.
Houston, an educator and performing artist, has been teaching and performIng for over
6 years. She is the director of her own dance company and assistant professor of dance in
he Department of Ane Arts at Barry University.
Last year's performance was attended hv over 1,100 students from 13 elementary,
niddle,. and high schools, and rehab centers in Miami-Dade as well as parents and residents.
The philosophy behind CCAD's play Is that since peer pressure has long been a major
,dicator of Involvement in negative activity, CCAD utilizes peer Involvement In a pOSitIve
'lay, according to Backers,.
~
CCAD ;s a non,..proflt organization solely dedicated to the prevention of drug abuse
,nd to the education of middle and high school-aged youth in Dade County. Founded in
: 982, CCAD, which serves low-income students and their families In densely-populated
~frlc:an-AmerJc;an and Hispanic areas, provides education on the effects of drugs and
rddiction, and promotes a healthy lifestyle and responsible uses of leisure time.
