2000-23883 RESO RESOLUTION NO. 2000-23883 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FWRIDA, APPROVING AND AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER, OR IllS DESIGNEE, TO SUPPORT THE YEAR 2000 FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRA nON WITH FUNDING FROM RESORT TAX REVENUES FOR CITY SERVICES AND FIREWORKS, AS A CASH CONTRIBUTION, IN THE AMOUNT OF $25,000. WHEREAS, the City and the Ocean Drive Improvement Association will hold the annual 4th of July Celebration on the beachfront at 12th Street and Ocean Drive on Tuesday, July 4, 2000, which will begin at 7:00 p.m., with a swearing-in ceremony for children from all parts of the world that are newly naturalized citizens; and WHEREAS, the United States Air Force High Flight Concert Band will play throughout the event and during the finale with a first class fireworks show launched from two barges in the ocean; and WHEREAS, Miami Beach has an overwhelming appeal to the tourist as a favorite vacation destination and our numerous tourist-related special events continue to enhance the community as a whole; and WHEREAS, the City's cash contribution of $25,000 is necessary to assure that public safety, sanitation, and the firework's program are of a high caliber. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission herein approve and authorize the City Manager, or his designee, to support the year 2000 Fourth of July Celebration with funding from Resort Tax Revenues for City services and fireworks, as a cash contribution, in the amount of $25,000. ADMINISTRA TION RECOMMENDATION: Adopt the Resolution. ANALYSIS: The City of Miami Beach and Ocean Drive Improvement Association will hold the annual 4th of July celebration on the beachfront at 12th Street and Ocean Drive on Tuesday, July 4,2000. The celebration will begin at 7:00 p.m. with a swearing in ceremony conducted by the I.N.S. for children from all parts of the world that are newly naturalized citizens. The ceremony will be followed by a 90 minute set from the United States Air Force "High Flight Concert Band". This is the elite concert ensemble of the Air Force and they will be presenting popular and traditional patriotic music. They will also accompany the event finale with a first class fireworks show launched from two barges stationed along the shoreline. In addition to providing residents and visitors with the traditional 4th of July Celebration, the event will also serve to showcase the internationally acclaimed Ocean Drive Historic Art Deco District of South Beach. Media sponsorship for this event has been expanded to include the following: Sunshine Network (Statewide cable television); USA Florida a "Fly and Drive" from all over the State of Florida; The Miami Herald and EI Nuevo Herald, WFOR CBS Television, and Clear Channel Communications the nation's largest radio chain. Contests will run nationally in certain markets to win tickets and hotel accommodations to come down and see the celebration. The total cost of this event is estimated at $75,000, Of this amount, grants and sponsorships have been secured and are being sought.
