LTC # 206-2006 LETTER TO COMMISSION FROM: Mayor David Dermer and Members ofthe City Commission Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager J' v- X August 21, 2006 U Parks and Recreation Department- Summer 2006 Summary TO: DATE: SUBJECT: The Parks and Recreation Department is proud to report yet another very successful summer of day camps, specialty camps and tons of fun! This year we exceeded our 2005 participation numbers by nearly 10% in the summer day camps and over 15% in our specialty camps. We experienced significant increases in all age groups, (primers, juniors and teens). As one example of the many significant highlights we are pleased to report that the teen participation this summer increased from 183 in 2005, to 237 in 2006, a jump of 29.5%. Another highlight of this summer is that campers who might not have otherwise had the opportunity to enroll in a specialty camp were able to choose from 20 different specialty camps they wanted to experience. These camps focused on specialized interests such as tennis, dance, golf, ice skating, surfing/ snorkeling, fitness camp, fishing and rowing/ kayaking just to name a few. As a result of the Commission approved expanded scholarships program, ofthe 1,107 participants registered in specialty camps 196 received full or partial scholarships. This equates to 17.7% of our resident participants receiving specialty camp assistance compared to last year's 4.5%. Overall, ofthe 2,515 participants enrolled in a day camp or specialty camp, 50.1 % received a full or partial scholarship. Attached for your information is a summary of camp statistics reflecting both day and specialty camps for 2005 and 2006. e additional questions, please contact Kevin Smith at (305) 673-7730.
