The area's popularity has also driven up property values and caused building permits to increase sharply in recent years. Miami Beach's high profile as a tourist destination has brought other types of businesses to the area as well, according to Kevin Krauter of the Miami Beach Office of Economic Development. Music companies and Internet start-ups, among others, have flocked to the capi- tal of chic and have helped create a more stable economic backbone. Curiously though, as the large hotel chains such as Loews, Hilton and Marriott - along with huge residential developments - have come to Miami Beach, the population has remained fairly stable. Here is a look at the economic development of Miami Beach over the last decade as illustrated by key economic indicators. K e'j~ JI South Beach . Mid Beach . North Beach .
