HomeMy WebLinkAbout2006-26212 Reso RESOLUTION NO. 2006-26212 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, SETTING A PUBLIC HEARING TO CONSIDER NAMING FIRE STATION NO.4, LOCATED AT 7940 COLLINS AVENUE, IN HONOR OF LEONARD "LENNY" RUBIN, WHO DIED IN THE LINE OF DUTY IN A BUILDING FIRE AT THE OLD CARILLON HOTEL ON MARCH 8, 1962. WHEREAS, at the May 10, 2006 City Commission Meeting, a request was made by Commissioner Luis R. Garcia, Jr., to refer to the Neighborhoods/Community Affairs Committee the naming of Fire Station No.4 in honor of Leonard "Lenny" Rubin, who died in the line of duty in a building fire at the Old Carillon Hotel on March 8, 1962, and WHEREAS, at the May 24, 2006 Neighborhoods/Community Affairs Committee meeting, the item was discussed, a motion was made by Commissioner Libbin, seconded by Commissioner Garcia, and unanimously approved, recommending naming Fire Station NO.4 in honor of Leonard "Lenny" Rubin and forwarding the recommendation to the City Commission for their approval, and WHEREAS, pursuant to Chapter 82 of the Miami Beach City Code, the City Commission is required to consider the proposal at a public hearing, as such, the Administration is requesting that a public hearing be set on July 12, 2006, to consider the request. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission hereby schedule a public hearing on July 12, 2006, to consider naming Fire Station No.4, located at 7940 Collins Avenue, in honor of Leonard "Lenny" Rubin. ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION TO: FROM: DATE: SUBJECT: Adopt the resolution setting the public hearing. ANALYSIS: At the May 10, 2006 Commission Meeting, a request was made by Commissioner Luis R. Garcia, Jr., to refer to the Neighborhoods/Community Affairs Committee the naming of Fire Station No.4 in honor of Leonard "Lenny" Rubin, who died in the line of duty in a building fire at the Old Carillon Hotel On March 8, 1962. At the May 24,2006 Neighborhoods/Community Affairs Committee meeting, the item was discussed. A motion was made by Commissioner Libbin, seconded by Commissioner Garcia, recommending naming Fire Station NO.4 in honor of Leonard "Lenny" Rubin and forwarding the recommendation to the City Commission for their approval. The motion was approved unanimously. Pursuant to Chapter 82 of the Miami Beach City Code, the City Commission is required to consider the proposal at a public hearing. As such, the Administration is requesting that a public hearing be set on July 12 to consider the request. If the City Commission approves said proposal by 5/th votes at the public hearing, then the naming of Fire Station NO.4 will be submitted to the electorate of the City by referendum at the next regularly scheduled election. The name selection must then be approved by a majority of the electorate voting at the referendum. CONCLUSION The Administration recommends that the City Commission set the required public hearing to consider naming Fire Station NO.4 in honor of Leonard "Lenny" Rubin.
