Pine Tree Drive and La Gorce Drive Traffic Calming
TO:
DATE:
SUBJECT:
This Letter to the Commission is to inform you that at the request of La Gorce/Pine Tree
Homeowners Association, the County has been discussing traffic calming alternatives
which may require modifications and/or elimination of the traffic islands installed by the
County and later improved by the City with irrigated landscaping.
In meetings held by the County, HOA representatives have been present as has
Commissioner Libbin, Commissioner Heyman and City staff. The alternative that seems
to be most popular as presented by the County to date calls for reducing both Pine Tree
Drive and La Gorce Drives to one lane roads and adding one-directional bike lanes for
each street respectively. The last consultant's recommendation plan is attached for your
reference. Please note that the plan reflects the County's intent to maintain the one-way
characteristics of both roads. The Miami Dade County Public Works Department
supports the reduction of lanes pursuant to their consultant's conclusion that level of
service along these roads will not be affected.
In the above mentioned meetings, the County continues to be receptive to further
resident concerns and input. The County has been amenable to resident's requests to
generate further alternatives which incorporate their input into the design. However, the
County has also expressed that there will be limitations in the funding of this project. The
funding framework will be restricted to meet safety and accessibility. Discussion in
landscaping improvement commitments by the County are yet to be defined.
Consequently, it is the intent of City staff to allow the County to resolve these issues and
accomplish a recommended design which is acceptable to the community. Until such
time as a plan is generated by the County that can be reviewed, it is not productive for
City staff to participate in future meetings.
Once the County selects a proposed traffic calming treatment for Pine Tree Drive and La
Gorce Drive, the proposed solution will be reviewed by City staff and forwarded to the full
Commission. Any future concept discussions will involve the different impacted
Homeowners Associations in the area as well as City Committees, including, but not
limited to, Neighborhoods, Transportation and Parking Committee and Planning Board.
We will continue to inform you about this County project if it further develops into a
fundable and feasible concept alternative.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any other concerns or questions.
