2000-23989 RESO RESOLUTION NO. 2000-23989 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE ACCEPTANCE OF $190,173.00 IN SUPPLEMENTAL GRANT FUNDS, FROM THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE, "COPS MORE 98" GRANT PROGRAM. WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach was awarded a "COPS MORE"Grant from the United States Department of Justice, in 1998, in the amount of $469,565.00, with $347,673.00 from the United States Department of Justice, and $121,892.00 in matching funds from the Police Confiscations Account; and WHEREAS, the original grant was earmarked to hire ten (10) Public Safety Specialists and the purchase of twenty-seven (27) lap top computers; and WHEREAS, the United States Department of Justice has agreed to provide the City a supplemental award to this Grant, in the amount of$190,173.00, with the City providing matching funds, in the amount of $47,543.00, derived from the Police Confiscations Account; and WHEREAS, the supplemental funding will be used to fund the ten (10) Public Safety Specialists for an additional twelve (12) months. NOW THEREFORE BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission herein authorize the acceptance of $190, 173 .00 in supplemental grant funds, from the United States Department of Justice, "Cops More 98" Grant Program. BACKGROUND The City of Miami Beach, through the Police Department, was awarded grant funds from the United States Department of Justice's "COPS MORE 98" Program. "COPS MORE 98" is an abbreviation for the Community Oriented lolicing .l:!ervices (COPS), Making Officer Redeployment Effective (MORE). "COPS MORE" is a grant program designed to redeploy police officers to community policing duties through the use of technology , equipment and support resources (civilian employees). The original grant provided one year funding to hire ten (10) Public Safety Specialists and the purchase of twenty-seven (27) lap top computers. The supplemental grant will fund the ten (10) Public Safety Specialists for an additional year. The total grant that was awarded in 1998 was $469,565.00 with $347,673.00 coming from the United States Department of Justice and the City providing matching funds in the amount of $121 ,892.00, derived from the Police Confiscations Account. The US Department of Justice has offered to supplement this original award with an additional $190,173.00, with the City providing matching funds in the amount of $47,543.00, derived from the Police Confiscations Account. It is recommended that the Mayor and City Commission adopt this resolution approving the acceptance of the supplemental grant funds.
