SUBJECT:
The purpose of this LTC is to provide you with a copy of a thank you letter submitted by the
Coalition for a Safer North Beach.
The Miami Beach Police Department (MBPD) and members of the Administration have been
working with the residents of North Beach in coordination with North Beach Development
Corporation and the Coalition for a Safer North Beach in order to address the concerns that
have brought forth both to your individual offices as well as to mine.
MBPD has been very responsive to the issues raised by these residents, and have in turn
made modifications in order to better service them. The following initiatives have either been
on-going or will begin immediately:
. Report review will be held there by all three shifts
. Watch order on Parkview with a north end unit going on the island calling it off on
the radio
. Increase CST presence on both shifts to address perceived gang activity
. MAGTF sweeps of Island when they are working in the city. Next detail is Friday
12/01/06
. Dayshift bike units splitting their time between Commercial and Residential areas
. Motor units for high visibility on Days and Afternoons
In addition to the initiatives listed above, the MDPD will have overlap details in these areas on
all three shifts. The 1900 blocks of Marseilles and Calais have been checked periodically for
gang and drug activity, and the MDPD will have the Normandy cars monitor these areas.
Monthly meetings with North Beach Development Corporation will be held with Lieutenants
Clements and Devarona in attendance. These meetings will be held on the last Tuesday of
the month. Afternoon and Dayshift outreach PSS's will be scheduled for overtime in an
attempt to provide seven day coverage.
We are happy to see that the hard work and effort put forth by the Miami Beach Police
Department have engendered better understanding and communication among city
government and our residents.
If you have any questions or need additional information, please feel free to contact me.

Dear Chief DiCenso,
I would like to take the opportunity on behalf of the Coalition for a Safer North Beach to
thank you, Captain Cumming, and Lieutenants Clements and De Verona for contributing
your time and efforts for our meeting on Monday evening. The information that was
shared with the group was quite enlightening and valuable. The problems that were
addressed by our group were well received and answered in a way that satisfied those that
attended the meeting. I think it was good to allow our residents to vent, especially with
the homeless issues. Perhaps now they all have a better understanding of what the
Department is up against as well. As with most issues regarding the homeless, there are
definitely two trains of thought within the group. Hopefully the discussion has brought
greater understanding to both sides.
We all appreciate the efforts that are being made to satisfy the residents of the North
Beach area. Moreover, just putting faces to names has really helped the residents. They
feel more comfortable knowing whom they can call and to whom they will be actually
talking.
Once again, thank you for the time and effort you all provided our group. We are looking
forward to our meeting next month.
Sincerely,
Deborah Ruggiero
