THE MIAMI BEACH CONVENTION CENTER
The Miami Beach Convention Center was built in 1'.58 at a cost of $4
million. The original structure, now known as the South Hall, encompassed
108,000 square feet. In 1968 the North Hall, with 130,.500 square feet of exhibit
floor space, was added. A $1.5.7 million expansion project in 1974 added a
wraparaound section of meeting rooms and two independent lobbies to the
convention complex.
Today, the Miami Beach Convention Center is a 2.50,000 square foot multi-
purpose facility with 29 meeting rooms.
The $.54 million expansion project we break ground for today will increase
the Center's flat exhibit floor space from 2.50,000 to .500,000 square feet, and the
entire facility to more than one million square feet. It will be one of the few
convention centers in the country - the only one in the Southeast - to feature a
half-million square feet of contiguous floor space. Upon completion in 1988, the
Cent~r will have four equal-size halls of 12.5,000 square feet, each housing
meeting rooms, concession and catering areas and loading docks. Each hall will
have its own canopied main entrance.
Running east-west through the 600-foot interior width of the structure will
be a 2.5-foot wide cross-over walkway, anchored by two food service areas. The
walkway will enable delegates quick access to any of the four hall sections and
62 meeting rooms.
An open 8,000-square-foot area in the center of the second-level crossover
walkway will be ideally situated for transporting delegates through elevators,
escalators and stairs, and feature a deluxe circular restaurant and cocktail
lounge, providing diners a 360-degree view of the entire floor space below.
The expanded Miami Beach Convention Center will be one of the truly
world-class meeting and exhibit facilities in the country, situated in one of the
world's most famous international resorts. .
