SUBJECT: Julia Tuttle Tree Ring Renovation
January 1 st 2007, marks the ten year anniversary of the installation of the neon tree rings
within the Julia Tuttle interchange directly behind the welcome to Miami Beach sign.
These lighting features have provided a unique and lasting enhancement at this entrance
to the City. Over the past ten years, Miami Beach has seen many storms, including
hurricanes, and the rings survived and shined. These lighting fixtures have aged
however, and are now in need of repair/updating. The Parks and Recreation
Department has arranged for the artist who constructed the original neon rings, Mr. Jim
Morrison to perform this upgrade.
All of the tree rings are scheduled for an upgrade to include new wiring and the
installation of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) that will replace the neon. This newer
technology will allow the entire site to be "programmed" to change colors which will give
the City of Miami Beach, the ability to change the color, of the entire site for special
functions.
The tree rings will go dark on January 1st and the upgrade will begin shortly after. The
installation will be completed in time for Super Bowl Sunday when the rings will illuminate
with team colors for the event, then back to its original multi-color design, welcoming
residents and visitors to Miami Beach. The Welcome to Miami Beach sign with the now
lit holiday decorations, will not be affected by this work.
Should you have additional questions, please contact Kevin Smith at (305) 673-7730.
