RESOLUTION NO. 2000-24039
A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI
BEACH, FLORIDA, APPROVING A REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS FOR PROFESSIONAL
INTERIOR DESIGN SERVICES TO ENHANCE THE LOBBY AND ENTRANCEW A YS OF
THE JACKIE GLEASON THEATER OF THE PERFORMING ARTS AND THE
REPLACEMENT OF CARPET AT THE MIAMI BEACH CONVENTION CENTER IN THE
AMOUNT OF $1,970,000 ($650,000 FOR THEATER ENHANCEMENT AND $1,320,000 FOR
THE CONVENTION CENTER CARPET).
WHEREAS, the City owns the Miami Beach Convention Center and Jackie Gleason Theater of the
Performing Arts and is desirous of maintaining those facilities in a first class condition; and
WHEREAS, the City and SMG, as the City's manager and agent for the aforementioned facilities,
have developed a long-term Capital Projects Plan for the facilities; and
WHEREAS, the Administration and SMG having recommended that it is in the best interest of the
facilities that the City move forward with the implementation of said Capital Projects Plan.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission herein approve the Request for Proposals in order to accomplish the enhancement of
the theater lobbies and entranceways and the replacement of carpet at the Convention Center, in the
amount of $1 ,970,000 ($650,000 for theater enhancement and $1,320,000 for the Convention Center
carpet).

SCOPE OF SERVICES:
The City of Miami Beach and SMG are seeking the services of a professional interioc design firm that will
lend to the construction of the fullowing:
I. Make recommendatioos for renovations, which will enhance the lobby and entranceways of the
Theater. A successful bid for renovations would combine and somehow incorporate the history of the
theater as well as the vibrancy and energy of current Miami Beach. Spaces dedicated to the major
figures and players of Jackie Gleason Theater's early and halcyon years such as George Abbott (Box
Office) and Jackie Gleason (Founders Room) should be incorporated. Overall feeling has to be
forward looking, diverse and resonant with high quality and energy of today's Miami Beach and be
compatible and complimentary to the interioc seating space. Specific areas include: Wall covering,
carpet, ceiling treatment, lighting and furnishings as follows:
First Level Lobby -
. Current bars (2) need to be replaced
. Add Coffee bars at the North and South ends of the lobby
. Add two additional bars in the froot lobby entrance to replace the portable units
. Add one additiooal bar between the men and women's restrooms to replace the portable units
. Add a concierge desk (built in) 00 the right side of center lobby with cabinet space behind for
storage of hearing impaired earphones and concierge materials
. Add a novelty display counter 00 the left side of center lobby with storage and display case
behind
First Level Founders Room -
. Replace the current bar
. Add glass entrance doors
First Level Box Office
. Add built in brochure rack with storage space underneath
. Add wall mounted display cases for large posters
. Add glass entrance doors
Secood Level Lobby -
. Remove existing bars
. Add built in bars 00 each side of the center lobby
2. Provide samples, cut-sheets, drawings and presentation boards to the selection committee.
3. Prepare specificatioos to be included in the bidding documents for constructioo.
4. Provide design services for the replacement of carpet at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
5. Assist in review of bid responses to determine conformity to specificatioos.

Adopt the Resolution.
BACKGROUND:
The Jackie Gleason Theater was built in 1950, and has undergone several renovations. The most
recent rehab was completed in 1991. This project is specific to lobby and entranceway enhancement,
with consideration to the Theater's past as well as the vibrancy and energy of current Miami Beach.
The overall goal is to achieve a lobby and entranceway atmosphere for patrons which is forward
looking, diverse and resonant with high quality and energy of today's Miami Beach and also
compatible and complimentary to the interior seating space.
The extent of the design is intended to address carpet replacement, wall coverings, ceiling treatment,
additional lighting and furnishing to include: Replacement of the refreshment stands, additional
coffee bars, a concierge desk, and a display area for novelty sales.

Interior Design RFP
The carpet at the Miami Beach Convention Center is over ten years old and replacement is needed
to maintain a first class facility.
The cost of the Theater lobby and entranceway enhancement is estimated at $650,000, and the carpet
replacement at the Convention Center is estimated at $1,320,000. This amount is available from the
Convention Center Capital Plan.
