ANALYSIS
The Florida Legislature established the Cultural Facilities Program in 1988 to provide assistance to
units oflocal govemment and non-profit organizations for the renovation, construction, and acquisition
of cultural facilities. The maximum annual award is $500.000, with a cumulative maximum total of
$2 million for each project. The City has previously received Cultural Facilities Program grant
awards for the Colony Theater and the Bass Museum.
Originally built in 1962, and located across from the Miami Beach Convention Center and near City
Hall, the Botanical Garden has been revita]ized with the support and enthusiasm of community
volunteers. As a result of Resolution No. 99-23378, which accepts the results ofthe November 3,
1999 General Obligation Bond general election, the Miami Beach Botanical Garden has been
allocated $1.5 million for its renovation. This is a sufficient amount to satisfy the 2: 1 match ratio
of the Cultural Facilities Program in the event that the Botanical Garden receives $500,000.
