SUBJECT: Wayfinding Signage Status Report
In July, 2005, the Mayor and City Commission awarded a contract in the total project amount
of $1 ,675,713.00 to Gable Signs and Graphics to complete a wayfinding signage program.
Subsequent to the contract award, the Florida Department of Transportation (FOOT) in
consultation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) would not issue a permit for
the new signs unless the City conducted further research and documentation on the legibility
of the desired signage font.
In compliance with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) requirements, the City
conducted research and documentation on the legibility of the desired signage font (Futura
font). The font field testing was conducted the week of March 20, 2006. The research
conducted showed that the Futura font typeface provided sign legibility and recognition
distances that are equal to or greater than standard highway lettering.
In May, 2006, the Florida DOT submitted to FHWA an official "request to experiment" with
Wayfinding Guide Signs, including the use of the Futura font, in accordance with procedures
established in the Federal Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices. On June 23, 2006, the
FHW A issued a letter approving the experimentation request.
The wayfinding consultant began revisions of the design to comply with the requirements set
forth in the FHW A experimentation approval letter. The contractor made the required
revisions to the shop drawings and prepared the signed and sealed permit drawings.
In February, 2007 the signed and sealed drawings were submitted to the Florida Department
of Transportation (FOOT) permit office for review and permit issuance. Initial permit review
by FOOT indicated that additional documentations were needed. The additional
documentation is being prepared by the consultant and contractor and will be sent to FOOT
within the next few weeks.
In March, 2007 the signed and sealed drawings were presented to the City's Building
Department. The contractor is preparing the permit application documentation and will
proceed with the permit review process shortly.
We expect to have the permits issued in April, 2007. The second notice to proceed will be
iSS;;:4ued after receipt of the Building Department permit in early May, 2007. The construction
can then egin in mid July and substantial completion is anticipated by November, 2007.
