The sound of sneakers squeaking on the court means it's that time of the year again for the
Parks and Recreation's annual basketball league for children ranging in ages 7 to 13 years
old. The program began in late February and runs through the first week of May 2007,
Monday through Thursday from 5:15 p.m. to 9:00p.m. The City of Miami Beach basketball
programs promotes physical fitness in a safe, structured and enjoyable environment.
March 15, 2007- Fourteen members from the Seahawks Swim Team recently qualified to
participate in the Florida Gold Coast Speedo Junior Olympics held at the Coral Springs
Aquatic Complex. The Seahawks Swim Team at the Scott Rakow Youth Center focuses on
teaching children endurance, team work and swimming techniques in order to prepare them
for competition. Participants Alexander Reid, Andres Reyes- Capo, and Marcos Macarena
placed high enough to qualify for the upcoming All Star Championships.
March 16, 2007- The North Shore Park Teen Club recently hosted a dance to celebrate St.
Patrick's Day. Approximately 418 juniors and Teens danced the night away dressed in green
and white to show their St.Patty's spirit while dancing to the latest Latin, hip-hop, and R& B
hits provided by the Hip- Hop Workshop. Besides the fact children came out and had a blast,
little did they know the money spent on pizza, soda, and entrance fees went to a great cause.
The North Shore Teen Club raised $1,500, all of which will be donated to Relay for Life and
the American Cancer Society.
March 24, 2007- The Miami Beach Parks and Recreation Department hosted the Flamingo
Park 3rd Annual Spring Duathlon. Participants ranging from 9 to 62 years of age enjoyed a
morning of challenging physical fitness which consisted of a one mile track run, half-mile swim
followed by another one mile run to the finish. All of the well conditioned athletes completed
the course including 9 year old Isabella Reyes- Capo.
April 2, 2007 - The City of Miami Beach's second annual Bicycle Safety Camp, a weekly
camp structured to teach children basic bicycling knowledge needed to safely and confidently
ride a bike is being held at the North Shore Youth Center from April 2-6, 2007, from 9a.m. to
5p.m. The bicycle safety camp combines classroom discussions and activities with on-bike
skills practice sessions along with several fun and exciting field trips to bike paths in the local
area. The camp curriculum was developed by the Florida Traffic and Bicycle Safety Education
Program.
April 5, 2007- The North Shore Park After-School program will be hosting a day full of
excitement beginning with the Punt, Pass and Kick competition followed by the game show
event Jeopardy, as part of the fun and exciting recreational programs scheduled for the spring
