LETTER TO COMMISSION
September 8, 2000
TO: Mayor Neisen O. Kasdin and
Members of the City Commission
FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez ~~
City Manager
SUBJECT: POLICE DEPARTMENT ACCREDITATION
This Letter to the Commission is to advise the Mayor and Commission on the status of our Police
Department attaining International Accreditation.
Beginning Saturday, August 26, 2000 through Wednesday, August 30, 2000, the Commission on the
Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) had a team of three Assessors present in the
City of Miami Beach for an on-site Assessment of the Police Department. The Assessors were Team
Leader Major James Fox of the Henrico Cotrely Virginia Police Department, Assistant Chief Ivan
Takitani of the Maul County Hawaii Police Department and Lt. Paula Glennon of the Manchester
New Hampshire Police Department. The Assessment Team spent their time reviewing every
operation and administrative task the Police Department performs by reviewing the 439
Accreditation Files, meeting and talking with Police Department employees from all levels, riding
with police officers, meeting and talking with other City employees and holding a Public Information
Session to solicit input.
We are pleased to inform you that the Assessment Team found the Police Department in 100%
compliance with all the CALEA Standards that apply to it. A report of the on-site visit will be
presented to the entire CALEA Commission in late November of this year.
The next step in the process is a Hearing before the CALEA Commission. At this hearing, our Police
Department will be presented as a candidate agency. The on-site report will be entered into the
record and the Chief will be present to answer questions. At the conclusion of the Hearing, the
CALEA Commission will vote on the question of awarding Accreditation to our Police Department.
We have every confidence that the CALEA Commission will vote to award International
Accreditation to our Police Department.
We should all join in congratulating Chief Barreto and all the employees on this truly significant
accomplishment.
