LETTER TO COMMISSION
September 1, 2000
TO: Mayor Neisen O. Kasdin and
Members of the City Commission
FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez ~yf~
City Manager
SUBJECT: SELECTIVE TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT PROGRAM 2000 (STEP 2000)
This Letter to the Commission is to advise the Mayor and City Commission of the results of the
Police Department's STEP 2000 Traffic Enforcement Program.
The STEP 2000 Program began on July 17, 2000 and ended on August 30, 2000. The program
encompassed three aspects of traffic safety: Education, Engineering and Enforcement.
The Education aspect was accomplished with the assistance of the Metered Parking Department
placing the Variable Message Signal (VMS) boards at various locations conveying informational
warning messages to drivers.
The Engineering aspect consisted of conducting traffic engineering studies at problem locations
throughout the City and recommending changes to improve safety and road usage. This effort has
resulted in eight traffic engineering studies that will hopefully result in road improvements and
increased safety.
The Enforcement aspect took place over the entire 45 day period. Locations were selected based on
accident data, personal knowledge of police officers and citizen' s complaints. Officers issued a total
of 4,278 citations for moving violations, 1,764 citations for speeding violations, 461 citations for
parking violations, arrested 149 persons and towed 80 vehicles.
This will be a continuing effort by the Patrol Division of the Police Department due to the favorable
results achieved.
The Police Department should be commended for this successful program and its dedication to the
safety of our citizens.
