OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
NO. LTC # 159-2007 LETTER TO COMMISSION
TO: Mayor David Dermer and Members of the City Commission
FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager
DATE: July 6, 2007
SUBJECT: AD HOC HURRICANE TASKFORCE COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION
At the June 18, 2007 Ad Hoc Hurricane Taskforce Committee meeting, the Committee
members met with representatives from Florida Power & Light to discuss hurricane
preparedness, FPL's efforts to harden their system to better resist storms and specifically
FPL's efforts to maintain lines clear of vegetation to prevent outages. During the meeting,
the FPL representatives informed the Committee that one area in which they experienced
difficulty is undertaking line clearing that requires access be provided over private property.
Typically, power lines on the rear lot lines of residential properties are areas that are difficult
for FPL to access.
At the conclusion of the conversation, Chairman Joe Fontana moved that the City of Miami
Beach provide whatever assistance possible to Florida Power & Light in undertaking power
line clearing including soliciting the involvement and participation of homeowner associations
to assist in providing access for line clearing and furtherto provide public information relative
to this issue to help facilitate future efforts. Motion seconded by Committee member
Enrique Escobar. Motion passed unanimously.
The Administration would recommend that the City Commission accept and approve the
Motion and Recommendation made by the Ad Hoc Hurricane Taskforce Committee.
