COLONY THEATRE LAUNCHES CONSTRUCTION
With a spray of fine French champagne and spirited flourish from a classical
Brass Quintet, the construction phase of the Colony Theater rehabilitation was launched in high
style on Miami Beach's Lincoln Road Mall. The launching ceremony was sponsored by Sun Bank.
A former Art Deco Style movie house, the Colony will now be transformed into an intimate 520
seat Pertorming Arts Center. Construction is scheduled for completion in the Spring of 1986 for
what will be a major component of the economic revitalization of Lincoln Road Mall.
The Colony Theater renovation is a project of the Miami Beach Development
Corporation and funded by $645,000 of Community Development Block Grant Funds, from the
City of Miami Beach. The facility will become a home to the pertorming arts, complementing the
visual arts exhibited by the South Florida Art Center which also shares that end of Lincoln Road
Mall, and help to anchor the whole Arts District.
G. David Black, formerly Managing Director of the highly respected Coconut
Grove Playhouse, was recently named Theater Director for the Project. He is currently hard at
work arranging the programming for the inaugural season. This programming will include a
Colony Series of performances by South Florida companies in dance, music and theater as well
as additional programming of appearances by touring companies and other community per-
forming groups. Special film presentations will round out the schedule.
The Colony on Lincoln Road was originally a popular movie house and area
landmark. Through the efforts of Commissioner, Ben Grenald, then a member of the Visitor &
Convention Authority, the facility was deeded to the City by its owner Sam Kipnis. The project was
then turned over to MBDC with the intention of creating an intimate performing arts theater
unlike any other facility in Dade County.
"At last we are fulfilling the intent of Mr. Kipnis when he gave the theater to the
City for the community's benefit, use and entertainment pleasure," stated Commissioner
Grenald. "I look forward with great anticipation to the day these doors open to the public once
again."
The Colony is a community theater project and as such will need the full support
of the private as well as public sector. For those wishing to contribute to the Colony effort please
contact David Black, Colony Theater Director, Miami Beach Development Corporation, 600
Alton Road, Suite 505, Miami Beach, Florida 33139 or call (305) 538-0090.
