97-22261 RESO RESOLUTION NO. 97-22261 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING AN EXPENDITURE OF UP TO $5,000 FROM THE JACKIE GLEASON THEATER OF THE PERFORMING ARTS DOLLAR SURCHARGE FUND OF THE COMMUNITY BENEFIT COMMITTEE (CBC) TO THE UNITED FOUNDATION FOR AIDS (UFA) FOR THE PROMOTION OF "WEST SIDE STORY" AT THE JACKIE GLEASON THEATER OF THE PERFORMING ARTS (TOPA) . WHEREAS, Resolution No. 93-20871 allows the CBC to make recommendatior s relating to the promotion of events within TOPA; and WHEREAS, the CBC has recommended an expenditure of up to $5,000 for advertising "West Side Story", scheduled on February 6, 1997, at TOPA; and WHEREAS, the United Foundation for Aids (UFA) will be purchasing tickets froln Pace Theatrical Group at face value and will be reselling these tickets to supporters of t~ e fight against AIDS for a benefit performance of "West Side Story"; and WHEREAS, the sale will be made at a price higher than that afforded through t~e TOPA box office; and WHEREAS, the Administration would concur with the CBC's recommendation ar d requests that the Mayor and City Commission approve the expenditure of up to $5,OC 0 from the TOPA dollar surcharge fund of the CBC, to UFA for the promotion of "West Sice Story" . NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that an expenditure up to $5,000 from tt e TOPA dollar surcharge fund of the CBC be authorized to the UFA organization for tt e promotion of "West Side Story", to be held at TOPA on February 6,1997. BACKGROUND: Resolution No. 93-20871 provides for the Community Benefit Committee to make recommendatic>lls relating to the promotion of events within the Jackie Gleason Theater of the Performing Arts. In this effort, the Community Benefit Committee is recommending an expenditure of up to $5,000 for 1he advertising of the West Side Story Broadway show at the Jackie Gleason Theater of the Performing Arts scheduled on February 6, 1997. UFA organization will be purchasing tickets from Pc.ce Theatrical Group at face value and will resell these tickets to supporters of the fight against AIDS. The sale will be made at a price higher than that afforded through the Box Office. This premium will go to support the fight against AIDS. The UF A organization promoted the Liza Minelli concert last February 1996, at the Jackie Gleason Theater of the Performing Arts utilizing this same concept. Through these efforts, an approximately five hundred additional tickets were sold which raised funds for the UF A organization. CONCLUSION: The City Administration recommends approval of up to $5,000 from the Community Benefit Committee, from the dollar surcharge fund at the Jackie Gleason Theater of the Performing Arts ::OI the advertising of the West Side Story Broadway show.
