2007-26633 ResoRESOLUTION NO. 2007-26633 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, OPPOSING MIAMI-DADE COUNTY'S ELIMINATION OF BEACH MAINTENANCE BETWEEN THE JETTY AT SOUTH POINTS PARK AND THE 21St STREET BEACH AND URGING MIAMI-DADE COUNTY TO REJECT THE PROPOSED BEACH MAINTENANCE BUDGET CUTS WHICH WILL HAVE A NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE APPEARANCE AND CLEANLINESS OF BEACHES WHICH SERVE THE RESIDENTS AND VISITORS IN MIAMI-DADE COUNTY. WHEREAS, the beaches within the City of Miami Beach are popular destinations for domestic and international tourists, as well as for local residents, due to their quality and beauty; and WHEREAS, currently afull-time 5 person crew and a 2.5 person part-time crew, funded by Miami-Dade County, maintain the beaches between the South Pointe Park jetty to the 21St Street beach area between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily by removing debris and litter during those hours when the beaches are most heavily used; and WHEREAS, in their Fiscal Year 2007-2008 proposed budget, the Parks and Recreation Department of Miami-Dade County has proposed reducing its beach maintenance budget by eliminating the full-time and part-time crews in South Beach during the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. which will negatively impact the cleanliness and general appearance of the affected beaches, as well as the health, safety, and welfare of the visitors to those beaches; and WHEREAS, the beaches where maintenance is proposed to be eliminated constitute some of the most utilized and photographed beaches in Miami-Dade County, if not the world, and they are a significant attraction for tourists, as well as for local residents; and WHEREAS, the residents of the City of Miami Beach, and our visitors from destinations around the world, deserve clean and well-maintained beaches. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that the Mayor and City Commission hereby oppose any proposed budget cuts which would eliminate beach maintenance during the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. within the C'ty of iami Beach and urge Miami- Dade County to reject the proposed budget cuts.
