Dear Valued Friends,
This edition of "The Caring P/ace" demonstrates that our Centers in Miami, Hollywood, and
Pompano have truly had a Summer of Serving. Thousands of men, women, and children in South
Florida have been fed, clothed, sheltered, and provided programs to help them become successful in
life. Our Community Activity Center Summer Program in Miami has over 150 "at-risk" youth in our Day
Camp. This outreach to the homeless and needy could not be done without you.
It is no secret that housing costs in South Florida have skyrocketed over the past several years.
One of the great challenges of our men and women who graduate our programs is finding affordable
housing. It is simply very hard to rent an apartment or get a house for most of our graduates. With
over 85 years of proven service to the homeless and needy, the Miami Rescue Mission /Broward
Outreach Centers have started an Affordable Housing Initiative. The goal is to seek properties
in Miami-Dade and Broward counties which can be utilized as transitional housing for our men and
women; then in the future help them obtain permanent housing. We need your support. We need
people that can help in any renovations of acquired buildings. This means plumbers, contractors, elec-
tricians, carpenters, landscapers, and painters. We will also need new furniture for the units.
Funding for our Affordable Housing Initiative will come from individual donors, but there are also
many grants from city, county, state, and federal programs that we will be able to apply for. If you can
be of any assistance or would like to know more, please call Rey Santos, Affordable Housing
Director, at 305.571.2204 or 786.368.3760 or email him at Ley ntos caring lace org. Rey has
worked in the real estate business for many years as an investor and partner of a construction compa-
ny. He is presently meeting with city officials about this new initiative. Learn more by visiting our web-
sites: www.miamirescuemission.com or www.browardoutreachcenter.com.
Every major charity has a special event like awalk-a-thon, run-a-thon, or march-a-thon to raise
awareness and dollars for their organization. Well, after much thought, we have decided to have our
own event named The Sleep-a-Thon this October. What is the Sleep-A-Thon? It will be held in
several locations throughout Miami-Dade and Broward Counties to raise awareness of homelessness
and funding for our programs. The event will be from sundown to sunrise and people will come and
sleep out in the open with just the bare necessities emulating the plight of the homeless. Registered
participants will enroll sponsors that will pledge dollars for completing the overnight Sleep-A-Thon.
We are looking for participants and corporate sponsors. Area colleges and universities will be partici-
pating and Eastern Financial Credit Union is our first major sponsor. Visit our websites to learn
more of how you can make this event a Spectacular Success.
Thank you for all that you do to help change lives every day. That is why I tell everyone I meet
that °°Our Supporters are the Greatest People in the World!".
Sincerely,
~~~
First South Florida Sleep-a-Thou
Concept Proposal -June 25, 2007
Event -October 5 or 12: 5 PM to 7AM
Ori in
Many charities have special events to raise awareness for their non-profit and to raise
dollars for direct services to individuals. There are walk-a-thons, run-a-thons, march-a-
thons, etc. Every major event appears to be successful -both in community awareness
and fundraising. The Miami Rescue Mission /Broward Outreach Centers (Mission) have
served the community for over 85 years and has comprehensive programs for the
homeless and needy in Miami, Hollywood, and Pompano Beach. It is the largest single
provider of services in South Florida, serving nearly 1,000 men, women, and children
daily. The idea of an annual Sleep-a-Thon has been developed as to not duplicate what is
already being done by others and have an event that would be unique to the Mission.
What It Is
The Sleep-a-Thon will have supporters, donors, corporate sponsors, city officials, and
celebrities (either local or national) experience a night much like the homeless do. Parks
in Miami Dade and Broward will be utilized to host 4 sites. (2 in Dade, 2 in Broward).
Individuals will seek financial sponsorship for the number of hours that they will sleep
under the stars. Each person will only need the bare necessities for the night (what they
can bring in aback-pack). The goal is to simulate as close as possible what it would be
like to be homeless for an evening. It is anticipated that registration would be from 5 - 9
PM and the event end at 7AM the next morning. The final date has not been set, but it
will either be October St" or 12t" (Friday evening). This will help with media coverage
and does not tie up an entire weekend for the participants.
Who Will Participate
Presently there have been discussions with local universities and colleges. Barry
University, Nova University, FN, and Miami Dade College have already shown interest
and student representatives seem eager to participate. St. Thomas, Univ. of Miami,
Southeastern and others are being contacted. There will be a mailing to over 80,000
donor homes to announce this event and have people register.
Also need key Corporate Sponsorship. This would include the right to use name/logo on
all publications, media spots, posters, T-shirts, etc. At present not looking at large
sponsorship donation, but there will be some costs of promotion, printing, air-time (if not
given as public service spot) Employees from key sponsors should also participate, even
if only for four hours.
Have contacts with various talent agencies and private representatives to get national
celebrities involved. Presently have 5 committed sponsors and need another 5. Seeking
a--
Clear Channel support and well as Comcast, Miami Herald, Sun-Sentinel and other local
news outlets.
News Media will also be present (at the moment not exact count, but at least two major
stations.) Looking to get national news (CNN, FOX, etc) to feature event.
Broward County Homeless Initiative Partnership and Miami Dade Homeless Trust will
be contacted and form possible partnership. This event will specifically help the Mission,
but it will raise awareness of homelessness in general. Local Police will also be involved.
Reasons for Expected Success
1. Miami Rescue Mission /Broward Outreach Centers have history of successful
community events -most recent was Thanksgiving in April which had 120
volunteers. Nearly 700 homeless and needy were treated to meals and family
oriented entertainment. (Go to www.miamirescuemission.com/thanks ig vingapril
to see slideshow)
2. MRM/BOC has thousands of volunteers who will make this event possible while
keeping cost low.
3. This is not just a local event, but a South Florida event which will being media
attention. (This benefits MRM/BOC and our sponsors -ultimately the homeless
we serve)
4. Proven dedicated Community Development Team for the entire organization.
5. Friends in the Media (including Hispanic, Haitians, and non-Hispanic stations).
Reporters have done stories on our Centers before, but not at this magnitude.
6. It has never been done before in South Florida. Event takes place just before the
cold season sets in to highlight plight of the homeless.
7. There is no training necessary -just bring a cardboard box or mat and sleep!
It is expected that this will be a huge success. Looking to have anywhere between 1,000
and 2,000 participants the first year. Some want to contact celebs like Oprah to see if
national interest can be attained. Who knows how far this can go with proper marketing?
Dear Caring Friends,
As you read this letter Miami
~. Rescue Mission will have
b ~ already started the planning
and preparation for the very
busy and demanding Fall
Season that lies just ahead.
This past spring and summer
has been one of the most
demanding and successful
periods in recent history. Two new and innovative
programs, Thanksgiving in April and Christmas in
July, have both proven to be a tremendous blessing
to hundreds of homeless men, women and children
in the inner-city; however we must now look ahead
to what is just around the corner... "Back to School"
and then 'The Great Thanksgiving Banquet."
We need your help as we begin to "pack the pantry"
for the busiest season of the year. If you have con-
tact with food suppliers or if you know someone
who might want to help feed the poor and home-
less, please call the Community Development office
at (305) 571-2245 and let Marilyn Brummitt and her
staff know that you wish to make a donation.
Cash donations are always needed and are grate-
fully received. Cash donations allow our staff to
plan and buy the items needed to prepare the
menus and manage portion control. It also allows
our staff to provide the other necessities to care for
thousands of hungry and homeless individuals.
Thank you for your compassion and support for the
work of Miami Rescue Mission /Broward Outreach
Centers. You can give with confidence, knowing
that your gifts are doing the most good in our South
Florida community.
Sincere)
children. Some are homeless. Pictured left is the end of the school year program where children
received awards for educational improvements and special recognition for personal achievements. Over
150 kids are enrolled in the Summer Day Camp Program and nearly 100 kids participate in the Super
Saturday Bible Club. Children are taught computer skills, tutored in school subjects, participate in organ-
ized sports, and go on exciting field trips such as museums, water parks, rollerskating, movies, library,
and so much more. Your donations make this all possible -there is no charge for the children.
Lunches and snacks are also provided. Our goal is to help children become successful in life.
What a fantastic outreach to our homeless and
needy in our Miami community! °OChristmas In
July" was held on July 4th. It was all about
Bringing Independence to the Homeless. Over
230 volunteers came to help. There were pony
rides, a bounce house, cotton candy, paintball
arena, medical care, free clothing, great entertain-
ment, delicious food, and over 300 new tennis
shoes were given to needy kids. Each child
received a letter from Mayor Carlos Alvarez. We
even had a special visit from Santa's family and
Uncle Sam. Also, we passed out our purple
5~~> s;~ ~ bags filled with hygiene products ',
collected by our fabulous donors. THANK YOU !'
