SUBJECT: STATUS OF MIAMI BEACH HIGH SCHOOL IMPROVEMENTS AND
D RAI NAG E
On September 19, 2007, a small group of City Staff met with their counterparts at the Miami
Beach High School construction site. The purpose of the meeting was to try to reach some
resolution and/or basic understandings on drainage issues that would allow the schools
projects to continue unimpeded and also to address the area drainage concerns.
The meeting was very professional and very productive with several key understandings
agreed upon at the conclusion of the meeting.
Key understandings and actions are as follows:
• The City and School staff agreed on a reduced scope of additional work that would
be pursued by the high school drainage engineer that will ascertain any volume of
water that is beyond the capacity of the proposed improvements.
• The City agreed to pay one half of the cost of the engineer's time, approximately
$4,000.
• The drainage analysis by the school's engineer is anticipated to be available in
approximately 2 weeks from the Notice to Proceed.
• Upon conclusion of the drainage analysis, the consulting engineer will also have
formed preliminary design approaches which will allow the City and school district to
discuss design solutions. Also at that point in time, the parties would be able to
discuss how the improvements are to be funded.
• The preliminary design concept should also indicate which areas of Prairie Avenue
might be impacted by additional drainage improvements so that it might be possible
to release unaffected sections of the Prairie Avenue improvements for the high
school to begin.
As additional information is developed, we will keep the City Commission apprised as it is
fully understood that the high school is both a tremendous facility and amenity for our
community and that the interests of our area residents must also be protected as it relates to
drainage,. sociated with the project and improvements.
