OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
NO. LTC # 22s-2oo~ LETTER TO COMMISSION
TO: Mayor David Dermer and Members of the City Commission
FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager
r
DATE: October 15, 2007
SUBJECT: ISO Class 1 Rating
The purpose of this LTC is to inform you that has City of Miami Beach received the
Insurance Services Office (ISO) Public Protection Classification (PPC) Class 1 Rating.
ISO's PPC program evaluates communities according to a set of criteria defined in the Fire
Suppression Rating Schedule, and incorporates nationally recognized standards developed
by the National Fire Protection Association and the American Water Works Association.
Ratings range from Class 1 to Class 10.
A Class 1 rating by ISO represents exemplary fire protection, and the classification is based
on three (3) major factors evaluated: (1) Fire Alarm and communication System, which
accounts for 10% of the classification, focuses on a community's facilities and support for
handling and dispatching fire alarms; (2) Fire Department, which accounts for 50% of the
rating, focuses on items such as engine companies, distribution of fire stations and fire
companies and department manning and training; and (3) Water Supply System, which
accounts for 40% of the rating, focuses on the water supply a community uses for fire
suppression.
To date, Miami Beach is only one of nine communities in the United States with an
accredited Fire Department that has received a Class 1 rating from ISO. This rating is used
by insurance companies to help establish premiums for fire insurance, and generally, lower
premiums are offered to communities with better ratings.
Please join me in commending our Fire Department, Public Works Department and PSCU
for their hard work and effort throughout this classification process.
Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions or need any additional information.
