OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
N0234-2007 LETTER T~~~I~~HI
TO: Mayor David Dermer and Members of the City Commission
FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager
DATE: October 29, 2007
SUBJECT: Sleepless Night
I would like to invite you to attend aVIP/Press Reception, hosted by the Flamingo South
Beach, at the "Levity III" Luminarium in Collins Park, 2100 Collins Avenue, on Friday,
November 2"d at 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. in honor of Sleepless Night. Attached is a copy of the
invitation for your reference. Additionally, please join us for the ribbon cutting ceremony on
November 3`d at 5:30 p.m. at the Euclid Oval for the official kick-off of Sleepless Night.
Those in attendance will be joined by Christophe Girarde, Paris' Vice Mayor in Charge of
Culture and the inventor of "Nuit Blanche".
As you know, on Saturday, November 3, 2007, Miami Beach will host SLEEPLESS NIGHT,
an all-night, FREE, citywide celebration of the arts, presented by the City of Miami Beach
Tourism and Cultural Development (TCD) Department and Cultural Arts Council (CAC).
This event is being produced in-house by City staff as a result of the response from the
community in the 2005 and 2007 Community Satisfaction Surveys where residents identified
a desire for more cultural activities. SLEEPLESS NIGHT was also developed as a result of
the Cultural Arts Council's desire to create a signature, annual cultural event to celebrate
Miami Beach's commitment to the arts. With the opening of the Carnival Center, and the
discontinuation ofthe annual "Invitation to the Arts" season preview, the CAC felt it essential
to present a new event that would focus the cultural spotlight on Miami Beach.
This innovative citywide showcase of culture first began internationally when Paris hosted
the first "Nuit Blanche" event in 2002. The success of the event in Paris has made it an
annual city celebration and has become an international trend, spreading to cities such as
Rome, Madrid, Brussels, Toronto, and now, for the first time city-wide in the United States, in
Miami Beach.
Sleepless Night is a collaboration of all the city's major cultural institutions, theaters, galleries
and arts organizations, along with hotels, shops, nightclubs, restaurants, and international
artists and presenters. Events for children will be held during the earlier part of the night.
Free public transportation will connect the four major zones of activity- North Beach, Collins
Park, Lincoln Road, and Ocean Drive.
Event attendees will have access to more than 50 indoor and outdoor venues and 130
events throughout the City. The sundown to sunrise event will begin at 6:00 p.m. and run
until 6:00 a.m. Participants are present a wide variety of cultural programming, ranging from
the intimate (Matamoros' six-hour piano piece in the Miami City Ballet's Studio Five) to the
monumental (the Florida debut of Alan Parkinson's thousand-square-meter luminarium
Levity lll.) Attached is a copy of the Sleepless Night map and schedule of events for the
