LETTER TO COMMISSION
December 6, 2000
TO:
Mayor Neisen o. Kasdin and
Members of the City Commission
FROM:
Jorge M. Gonzalez
City Manager
d~
SUBJECT: POLICE DEPARTMENT ACCREDITATION
This Letter to the Commission is to proudly announce that our Police Department has been awarded
International Accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies
(CALEA). The Chief of Police, two members of his staff, and Commissioner Luis Garcia attended
the Winter meeting of CALEA held in Burlington, Vermont.
On Saturday, December 2, 2000, a hearing was held before a subcommittee of five CALEA
Commissioners. The subcommittee reviewed the Police Department On-Site Assessment Report (the
Report is attached for your review) and discussed its findings with the Chief. At the conclusion of
the hearing, the subcommittee voted unanimously to recommend to the entire 21 member CALEA
Commission that the Police Department be awarded Accredited status.
That evening, the Police Department was presented to the entire 21 member CALEA Commission
who voted unanimously to accept the subcommittee's recommendation and awarded the Police
Department International Accreditation. The Chief was presented an Award Letter and a copy is
attached for your review.
There are approximately 18,800 state and local law enforcement agencies in the United States, Our
Police Department becomes one of only 604 law enforcement agencies who have been awarded
International Accreditation by CALEA. This clearly places our Police Department in the top 3% of
all of the law enforcement agencies in the country.
Please join me in congratulating Chief Barreto and all the men and women of the Police Department
for this truly remarkable achievement.
