Date: December, 8, 2000
Subject: December 2nd Clean Sweep
On December 2nd, 2000, approximately 50 City employees participated in Clean Sweep, a multi-
Department effort to complete a wide range of high-visibility improvements on Collins Avenue from
5th to 46th Streets. Work crews from the Parking, Parks Landscape Maintenance, Police, Property
Management, Sanitation, and Public Works Departments participated in the special project designed
to significantly improve the appearance of one of the City's primary visitor corridors prior to the start
of the busy visitor season,
Workers began arriving at 6:00 a.m. and worked until 3:00 p.m, Work accomplished included:
repainting of yellow curbs and restriping of parking spaces and crosswalks; removal of stickers from
and repainting of fire hydrants, light poles, and trash cans; repair and replacement of damaged
parking and street signs; pressure cleaning of sidewalks; removal of trash; and trimming of trees.
Additional work including the removal, restoration and replacement of trash cans was completed
prior to the day of the event. Other highlights of the effort included the removal of floating trash
and debris adjacent to the Banana Bungalow and the clearing and cleaning of Collins Avenue along
Lake Pancoast and Indian Creek.
A letter informing Collins Avenue hotels of the work and encouraging their participation by making
improvements to their own properties was sent to approximately 40 establislunents. Media coverage
of the event was solicited, resulting in a cover photograph and caption (attached) in the Thursday
December 7th, Miami Herald Beach Neighbors section. The project was also covered the evening
of December 2nd in the Channel 10 and Channel 4 newscasts.
Clean Sweep was organized by the Operations Task Force with coordination provided by City
Service Delivery Manager Lynn Bernstein. The initiative was well received by the community and
reinforced the feasbility of a targeted inter-Department service delivery effort on an ongoing basis
in key high traffic zones.
