Organization:
Akropolis
~ecttitle: Sarau: Homage to Villa Lobos
Completely describe Project approved by the Grants Panel and in a separate narrative detail the revisions to the
Project based upon the award. Please be as specific as possible; name of event, venue, times, de. Also, detail the
organization's participation in Miami Beach Second Thursdays. Miami Beach Anchors should list specifics about
their mentoring program.
Akropolis will present Sarau: Homage to Villa Lobos by Giovanni Luquini and Dancers. Sarau is an
evening length dance-theater piece set around the music of Brazilian composer Heitor Villa Lobos. This
highly textured homage to Villa Lobos uses. the theme of Sarau or "get together" to set the scene where
dance, live music and period costuming create an evening of revelry and intense spirit in the tradition of
the late composer's classic yet revolutionary approach to making art.
Funding for this project will make possible the creation of a work representative of the influence Brlllilian
Contemporary Arts has in South Florida, showing the diversity and high quality of the discipli8es of
music and dance existing regionally. The cast of Sarau will be made up of Florida locals, including
Brazilian born choreographer Giovanni Luquini. Two guest dancers and a musical director will be
brought from Brazil for rehearsals and performances. A very important aspect of Villa Lobos' work is that
he created a music that was transcontinental. Breaking the frontiers of a strictly nationalistic style of
music, his work speaks the beauty of his homeland using its own, multifaceted language, which instilled
in music lovers the world over the desire to understand it. Luquini creates images that also break
frontiers; they are intellectually stimulating on a universal level and entertain visually in spite of the
viewer's preconceived notion of dance and/or theater. This production will incorporate the sophistication
of the composer's music as interpreted by local musicians, the extraordinarily fresh style of movement
that is Luquini's choreography, text in the form of poetry and dialogue in English and Portuguese, and
staging that is reminiscent of cinematography. Luquini's athletic and theatrical style engages the most
sophisticated dance audiences, while converting fledging audience members to the power and beauty of
contemporary dance theater. This is particularly effective for new, young audiences who are viewing live
performance for the first time. The work is stimulating and engaging, prompting young audiences to ask
questions and see dance in a new light. The choreographic work is based on aspects of the composer's
style, such as his rhythmic studies in fusion of folklore, focusing on Choro - a musical style characteristic
of Rio de Janeiro, and the timelessness of his art. It will be presented in four scenes: a duo accompanied
by live guitar, a solo, a trio accompanied by string quartet, and a group piece also accompanied by live
music. Sarau will feature collaborations with a local chamber ensemble that is TBA, local theater artists
performing spoken text in various languages and Luquini's remarkable choreography. Sarau promises to
attract audiences of dance and music lovers alike.
The chosen venue of this production is the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens. This public garden, not
traditionally a dance venue, has been selected to enhance the aesthetic quality of the theme while inviting
the audience to participate, as if they were guests at a party. Pre-production for Sarau will commence in
October of 2000. Research for the production includes a trip to Brazil in December of 2000 to procure
musical scores, period costuming and historical data to support the creation process. Rehearsal and
collaboration with community partners will begin in May of 2001. This event will be held at the gardens
on two consecutive weekends in September 2001, with a total of 7 performances. Akropolis'
participation in Second Thursdays will consist of an Open Rehearsal/Company Class held in the
Miami City Ballet's facilities on July 12,2001.
