Gonzalez, City Manager DATE: January 7th, 2008 SUBJECT: Parks and Recreation News Wellness Expo -The Parks and Recreation Department teamed up with Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez and hosted the second annual Initiative on Aging Miami Beach Wellness Expo that took place at the North Shore Park and Youth Center on Tuesday, November 27th, 2007. The expo began at 8 a.m. with over 80 seniors participating in health screenings, flu shots free of charge and a "Chair Aerobics" presentation. The Expo concluded at 1 p.m. and was accompanied with a special appearance by Mayor Alvarez, Miami Beach Mayor Matti H. Bower, who spoke to the seniors on the importance of healthy living. Winter Wonderland -The Parks and Recreation Department proudly presented our 3~d Annual Winter Wonderland at the North Shore Park and Youth Center on Friday, December 7th, 2007. The 50 tons of snow, games, rides, and face painting were available to the over 1,500 participants. Performances by the after school participants from North Shore Park, Scott Rakow Youth Center, and Flamingo Park pleased the crowd with dances to songs like "Let It Snow", "Rocking Around The Christmas Tree", and "All I Want For Christmas". Santa and Mrs. Clause were on hand strolling through the Wonderland interacting and taking pictures with everyone. Walking Tall -The Carnival Center for the Performing Arts Walking Tall physical theatre program was held on Saturday December 8th, at the Carnival Center in Downtown Miami. It included 8 jugglers and 6 stilt walkers from the North Shore Park and Youth Center's after school program. The Walking Tall program participants paraded down Biscayne Boulevard impressing the crowds with their stilt walking and juggling skills. The Carnival Center for the Performing Arts Walking Tall Physical Theatre Program is an essential program for kids to experience different forms of performing arts, and creative avenues on expressing themselves. Twas the Night Before Christmas -The North Shore Park and Youth Center's Junior Theatre Kids performed an original music holiday play on Friday December 14th, 2007. The kids were given the opportunity to use their imaginations, and create the characters they chose to perform as in the play "Twas the Night Before Christmas". The play took place in the auditorium of North Shore Park, with family members and friends in attendance. Social Club Holiday Show- The North Shore Park and Youth Center's Margaret M. Swett Social Club (for developmentally disabled adults) hosted its annual Holiday Party on Saturday December 15th, 2007. The Social Club's Annual Holiday party began at 5:30 p.m., and food and beverages was provided for the attendees along with music provided by the Hip Hop Workshop. Play Time Holiday Show- The Play Time program held their Holiday Show on December 20th, 2007 at 10 a.m. The 19 adorable "Play Time" participants' ages 3-4 years old performed Holiday classics such as "Jingle Bells", "Joy to the World", "The Dreidel Song" and the grand finale of "Feliz Navidad". Santa's guest appearance surprised the little ones with gifts and posed for photographs. Holiday Happenings -The spirit of the holiday season spread throughout the Scott Rakow Youth Center as residents from the Miami Beach community took part in the annual Holiday Happenings event held on December 21St, 2007. A live jazz and rock band, dance and singing performances, a variety of carnival games and rides along with food and refreshments were some of the "happenings" that entertained the hundreds of children, family and friends. Children decorated their very own cookie and made stops at the arts & crafts station. National Park Services -Crocodiles, Manatees, and Florida Panthers are all endangered species that live right here in South Florida's national parks. On Friday, December 28th, 2007 the Biscayne, Dry Tortugas, and Everglades National Park Services came to the North Shore Park and Youth Center at 2 p.m. to speak with the after school participants about the animals that inhabit our state, but are on the verge of extinction. This will be the National Park Services' third season of their outreach program. Please mark your calendar for these Parks & Recreation Department upcoming events: Invitations Attached.
