LTC 027-2008 Expansion of Recycling Program in City Facilities ?0~8 JAS 25 A~ 9= 39 CITY CLa~.~~ ~-<'S 0~~~'CE OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER NO. LTC # o27-Zoos LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: Mayor Matti H. Bower and Members of the City Commission FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager DATE: January 23, 2008, SUBJECT: EXPANSION OF RECYCLING PROGRAM IN CITY FACILITIES The purpose of this LTC is to provide the Mayor and City Commission with information regarding the expansion of the Recycling Program at City Hall and to add the program to other City facilities. Consistent with the expressed interest of the City Commission and the Ad-hoc Green Committee to become more "Green", this recycling expansion was negotiated with our waste hauler. Currently, only office paper is recycled at City Hall. Effective January 28th, 2008, the Recycling Program will be expanded to include the following locations: the Scott Rakow Youth Center, North Shore Community Center, Miami Beach Police Headquarters, and 21st Street Recreational Center. In addition, the program will now collect a wider variety of recyclable materials including all types of plastics, metals, aluminum, glass, paper, cardboard, newspaper, and chipboard (e.g. cereal boxes). The collection system will now be single stream, which means that all the recyclable items will be collected in a single bin. There will be no need to separate paper from cans and bottles thereby simplifying the recycling program while expanding it significantly. Bins will be centrally located to facilitate pickup. Waste Management, Inc. will provide pick up service at no cost to the City. Administration will train staff and janitorial service workers on participating with the new Recycling Program to ensure program success. Please feel free to contact the Public Works Department for additional information. J M ~~b F:\work\$ALL\(1) EMPLOYEE FOLDERS\LISA BOTERO\RECYCLING\LTCrcyclprgrm01.15.08.doc
