Gonzalez, City Manager ~ ~ATE: February 5~", 2008 , SUB~ECT: Parks and Recreation News - January 2008 New Year's Dance - On January 4, 2008, the North Shore Park and Youth Center held a dance for 300 juniors and teens in 4t" through 12th grade to welcome in the New Year. The dance lasted 3 hours and was held in the gymnasium of the Youth Center. Teen Club Camping Trip - On January 5, 2008, teens from the North Shore Park and Youth Center's Teen Club ventured on their annual camping trip to Peace River in Arcadia Florida. Days before the trip, the teens had the opportunity to practice what the "wild life" would be like by setting up tents and kayaking in the bay all in preparation for their 16 mile canoeing adventure. The trip was a reward to those teens that participated and volunteered in recent special events, and who continued to demonstrate the importance of community service. Dysfunctional - On January 11, 2008, the North Shore Park Drama Club put on yet another phenomenal performance, their first ever comedy. "Dysfunctional" premiered at the Byron Carlyle Theatre in front of an audience of 250 residents. The play was based on the television hit series "The Office". Broadway Ice Skating Exhibifion - On January 13, 2008, the Scott Rakow Youth Center's figure skating team celebrated Miami Beach's warmest winter yet by inviting their friends and families to join them for a Broadway ice skating exhibition, "Broadway & Blades, Baby". Over thirty skaters ranging from age 2 to their mid-twenties starred in the exhibition. Recreation Expo - On January 19, 2008, from 1-4 pm, approximately 1,000 people registered for youth and adult athletic programs and to enjoy the fun and food at Flamingo Park, which included hot dogs, a bounce house, a spider-climb wall, and a Fun Slide. A record of 400 registrations was recei~ed for sports such as Intramural Baseball and Basketball, Soccer Clinics, Girl's Softball, and Volleyball. Around the world - On January 25, 2008, nearly 400 people took part in an exciting "Around the World" event that was held at the Scott Rakow Youth Center. The extraordinary evening featured exhibits, decorated to portray different places "Around the World". Using a uniquely designed passport, all guests were granted access to journey through the jungles of Madagascar, visit the pyramids of Egypt, watch a Broadway Show in New York, see the mystical dragons of Japan, learn about Argentina's most popular sport, attend a classic Italian dinner, and take part in a Mexican fiesta. Special Olympics - On Saturday, January 26, 2008, the City of Miami Beach Parks and Recreation Department proudly hosted the Miami-Dade County Special Olympics Local Games Basketball Competition at the North Shore Park and Youth Center. O~er 120 Special Olympians competed and received metals from all over Miami-Dade County, including The City of Hialeah, City of Miami and Miami-Dade Leisure Access Group. Athletes competed in individually skill challenges or in a 3 on 3 team competition. The athlete's scores that were accumulated at the local games will be tallied with high scorers being invited to compete at the Special Olympics State Games. Upcoming Events: Cupid's Carnival - On Friday, February 8, 2008, Flamingo Park will host their 2"d Annual Cupid's Carnival from 6 pm - 9 pm. Last year over 1,000 members of the community attended the event. Enjoy carnival rides, DJ entertainment, arts and crafts and more. Promote a Healfhy Heart - On Wednesday, February 13, 2008, after school members at the Scott Rakow Youth Center will have the opportunity to participate in many activities that "Promote a Healthy Heart" such as physical fitness and healthy snack tasting. Sweet Heart's Dance - On Friday, February 15, 2008, North Shore Park Youth Center invites juniors and teens in 4th through 12th grade to dance and celebrate Valentine's Day with the hot sounds of their DJ/Hip Hop Club from 6 pm - 9 pm. Movie in the Park - On Friday, February 22, 2008, Normandy Isle is hosting Movie in the Park and will be featuring "Transformers" at 7 pm.
