LETTER TO COMMISSION
January 24, 2001
TO: Mayor Neisen O. Kasdin and
Members of the City Commission
FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez ~ ~
City Manager
SUBJECT: MIAMI BEACH POLICE ATHLETIC LEAGUE AND NAUTILUS MIDDLE
SCHOOL BICYCLE GIVEAWAY
This Letter to the Commission is to advise the Commission of a joint program created by the Miami
Beach Police Department, the Miami Beach Police Athletic League (PAL), and Nautilus Middle
School.
Mr. Sidney Jackson, a teacher at Nautilus Middle School approached Principal Freddy Pittman with
the idea of rewarding perfect attendance by students. Mr. Pittman and Mr. Jackson contacted Chief
Barreto and Officer Bernie Winer, the Executive Director of PAL, and asked them if they would
assist in this program by supplying bicycles that had been donated to PAL. Both readily agreed. The
program as established, will give a bicycle, helmet and bicycle lock up to 30 students who have had
perfect attendance for the last two grading periods.
Each of the thirty bicycles was professionally reconditioned, at minimal cost, by the Miami Beach
Bicycle Center, 601 - 5th Street, Miami Beach and are ready to ride!
The bicycles will be presented by the School, the Police Department, and PAL on Friday, February
9,2001, at 11:00 a.m. at the Nautilus Middle School Auditorium. We cordially invite the Mayor and
City Comxnission to attend this ceremony. Please contact Mr. Pittman or Officer Winer if you wish
further details.
Please join me in congratulating Mr. Pittman, Mr. Jackson, Chief Barreto, and Officer Winer on
establishing is program and the students who have earned these bicycles.
