2000-23875 RESO - RESOLUTION NO. 2000-23875 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, OPPOSING THE USE OF ANY TAX OR THE IMPOSITION OF ANY CRUISE SURCHARGE TO SUPPORT THE BUILDING OR OPERATING OF A NEW BASEBALL STADIUM IN MIAMI-DADE COUNTY. WHEREAS, the cruise industry is an important segment of our local visitor industry; and WHEREAS, up to one (I) out of every ten (10) overnight visitors to Greater Miami and the Beaches is a cruise visitor; and WHEREAS, cruise visitors contribute direct expenditures of over $335,000,000 to our economy; and WHEREAS, the cruise industry employs directly over 6,700 persons in Greater Miami and the Beaches; and WHEREAS, Florida Marlins owner John Henry has proposed taxing the cruise industry to support construction of a new stadium for his team; and WHEREAS, professional team sports contribute less than one half of one percent to overnight visitation to Greater Miami and the Beaches; and WHEREAS, the tourist industry should not be taxed to support non-tourism activities; and WHEREAS, 39% of resort taxes currently collected by Miami-Dade County supports sports facilities and programs; and WHEREAS, on March 16, 2000, the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau Board of Directors passed and adopted a resolution opposing the imposition of a cruise surcharge or any tax to support the building or operating of a new baseball stadium in Miami-Dade County, and the Mayor and City Commission of the City of Miami Beach likewise wish to oppose the use of any tax, such as the resort tax, bed tax, or convention development tax, or the imposition of any cruise surcharge for this purpose. ~ NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that the use of any tax or the imposition of any cruise surcharge to support the building or operating of a new baseball stadium in Miami-Dade County is hereby opposed.
