LTC 102-2008 Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen Visiting the Teen Clubm MIAMIBEACH OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER No. LTC # ioz-zoos LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: Mayor Matti Herrera Bower and Members of the City Commission FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager ~ ~ C~~ '~~ DATE: April 9, 2008 Sua~ECT: Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen Visiting the Teen Club We are pleased to inform you that we were recently notified that Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen will be visiting with the youth members and parents of the Parks & Recreation Department's Teen Club housed at the North Shore Youth Center. The visit is scheduled for April 12, 2008 at 12:00 P.M., in the auditorium of the youth center. The purpose of the visit is to provide an opportunity for the Teens and our community to thank the Congresswoman for her staunch support in securing the recently awarded grant from the OJJDP (Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention) FY 08 Earmarks Program in the amount of $681,500 to be used to support and expand the current City of Miami Beach Gang and Drug Prevention Program. This is the second time funds have been directed to the City of Miami Beach for this effort. The initial grant was allocated two years ago when the City received $50,000 as a start-up. Due to the success of the program the second allocation was recommended. The Teen Club started in 2004 with only nine teens; today we are proud to state we have 120 members at North Shore Park. The recently approved funding will be utilized to maintain the current program at North Shore Park while expanding the program, using the same format, to the south end of the city. The second site will be at the 215 street Community Center, directly across the street from Miami Beach High and will include transportation for teens from Nautilus Middle School. Attached for your information is a comprehensive overview of the successes of the current Teen Club program and an outline of the program's expanded action plan. Also included are DVDs of the Teen Club and two of the drama performances they have produced. We hope you will join us on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at 12:00 P.M. to meet the Teen Club members and thank Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen for her support of our youths-,see tie teens perform segments from "The Streets" and enjoy lunch. _, s~ Should you have additional questions, please contact Kevin Smith at (305) 673-~30~ r- ~ JMG/RCM/KS ~ ~ v"% '~ c: Robert C. The North Shore Park Teen Club was designed to give at-risk teens within the Miami Beach community the opportunity to be a part of a program that teaches the social skills necessary to overcome such barriers. North Shore Park & Youth Center, which openned in the Summer of 2004, became a reservoir for children from low income families within the Miami Beach community. In an effort to target the rise of at risk teens in the neighborhood, the City of Miami Beach Parks & Recreation Department developed the Teen Club. The program provides educational and cultural experiences to registered members free of charge. Teen Club members are required to attend the program at least three times a week, submit their report cards on a quaterly basis, and volunteer in city community events for a minimum of 60 hours in a eight month period. In addition, the time accrued for volunteering may also be used towards graduation requirements for school. The Teen Club acts as a second home to many of its 12~ members as they spend most of their free time at the facility. By embracing the teens and having them flourish in a structured environment, a mutually beneficial relationship is obtained as the fieens are involved in more socially responsible activities rather than contributing to the crime rate within the city or becoming another unfortunate statistic. The North Shore Park Drama Club put on another phenomenal performance with their first comedy ever. "Dysfunctional" Premiered on Friday, January 1 1, 2008 at the Byron Carlyle Theatre on Miami Beach. "Dysfunctional" is a comedic satire, centered around every day scenarios that occur in the work place. The play was based on the TV hit "The Office". With a packed house of 250 audience members, the North Shore Players brought their "A" game making this performance their most memorable. Screams of laughter could be heard from the audience as the teen actors tackled tough issues such as sexual harassment and sexism with wit and originality. The North Shore "Players" Drama Club Makes the "The Youth of the Nation" Bilingual On Monday June 25th, the North Shore Players Drama Club premiered The Streets 2 "Youth of the Nation" at the Embassy Suites to perform for the Puerto Rican Youth Coalition. The Coalition brought kids from their homeland to train on methods of drug prevention to take back and educate their youth. The Streets 2 "Youth of the Nation" was the perfect way to kick off their week of training: For the first time ever, the Drama Club switched the script. The play was performed in urban "Spanglish" which is a combination of English and Spanish to make the audience feel more at home. Throughout the segment, many of the actors answered all types of questions, but the one question that stood out from the rest was directed to Julio Alfaro (who played a touchy role acting as a homosexual teenagerl who was asked, "Why is it that in some scenes you wear sunglasses?" The response was, "When my character feels uncomfortable or unwanted he wears the shades as a mask". In response the individual asking the question replied "I could relate". The Streets 2 -Premieres At Nautilus! On April 26, 2007 The North Shore Park Drama Club also known as The North Shore "Players" put on their hit play The Streets 2 "Youth of the Nation" at Nautilus Middle School. At 2pm the auditorium was packed at capacity with restless young teenagers awaiting the curtains to open. Not knowing what to expect the teens were caught by surprise as the opening scene jumps right into it with an interaction with a street thug "Dirt" persuading the level headed "Karl" to the street life. As the play came to an end, the kids gave a standing ovation to the actors for the performance displayed. Followed by the perforrriance, the kids who viewed the play had the opportunity to ask the cast and director questions about The Streets 2. The questions were awarded with a copy of the soundtrack and custom made t-shirts. One of the faculty members, Mrs. Kenaush stood up stating with passion "this play was one of the best written I've seen and the content hit right at home." Lights, Camera, Action...FIR5T EVER!!! Theater in the Park. The City of Miami Beach Parks and Recreation Department provided a new experience for an audience of over 250 adults and children on Friday, January 12, 2007 at their FIRST EVER outdoor Theater in the Park. "NUMB", the feature presentation for the evening was a play created with the idea of providing a better understanding of drugs and its impact on people. The scenery included a stage area, lighting system, props and sound effects of flying helicopters, music, guns shots to simulate a battle field all used to create a more realistic ambience. The play, inspired by the motion picture Equilibrium portrayed a world that was ruined by a nuclear war which caused toxins to spread through the earth leaving humanity scourged. As a result, civilization was divided into two groups, the advocators of the drug and the rebels who were in search of a cure.
