No./p4 - ':In I LETTER TO COMMISSION March 29, 2001 TO: Mayor Neisen O. Kasdin and Members of the City Commission FROM: J~rge M. Gonzalez \ tfv~ City Manager U 0 SUBJECT: EXISTING VACANCIES ON THE mSTORIC PRESERVATION AND DESIGN REVIEW BOARDS As you may be aware, the City has two (2) vacancies on the Design Review Board (DRB), as well as one (1) vacancy on the Historic Preservation Board (HPB); the vacant categories are indicated hereto: Hrn. 1. One at-large member who owns or manages a property or properties located in one of the city's historic districts, and who has demonstrated interest and knowledge in urban design and the preservation of historic buildings. The position was previously held by Mr. Saul Gross, who resigned in February. IlliB. 1. One registered landscape architect. The position was previously held by Mr. Charles Alden, who resigned in March. 2. One citizen at large. The position was previously held by Mr. Victor Diaz, who resigned in February. The most pressing need for members is the DRB, which is coming perilously close to a short board. Currently there are only five (5) members on the board, and a minimum of four (4) members are needed to take action on a project. This does not leave a lot of room for absences by the existing board members. Charles Alden was an exceptionally fme DRB member and his loss will leave somewhat of a vacuum in the design review process, as the Board is now without a member with substantial experience in landscape architecture. Mr. Alden is a highly qualified landscape professional with a very acute Page 2 March 29,2001 LTC - Appoints to the HPB abd DRB RECEIVED 01 .'", "' p' "," . -" "11 II: SF; sense of urban design, and city planning as wel{ 'He widbtsfb<fuitifl'l~ig picture" and what it means to "build successful and enduring urban environments" in which people will always want to live as well as visit. Given the critical role that landscape (with all of its varied facets) plays in making a dense tropical urban environment not only bearable but desirable, the Administration feels that it is important to appoint a strong and experienced professional landscape architect of equal professional qualifications and urban attitude to replace him.
