LTC # 179-200$ LETTER TO COMMISSION TO: Mayor Matti Herrera Bower and Members of the City Commission FROM: Jorge M. Gonzalez, City Manager DATE: June 30, 2008 SUBJECT: American Society for Quality (ASQ) International Team Showcase Results The purpose of this LTC is to inform the Mayor and City Commission of the results of the Clean Team's participation in the ASQ International Team Showcase Competition held in Houston, Texas from May 5-7, 2008. As you know, the Clean Team participated in the International Team Showcase. Thirty- one teams were selected to participate in the competition; twenty-six (26) teams actually competed at the event. Gold, Silver and Bronze awards were presented to this year's winners, Boeing C-17 Program (116.7 points), Healthways (111.3 points) and Bayer MaterialScience LLC (108.1 points), respectively. As an organization, Boeing has along-standing tradition of participating in this awards process, with two separate teams selected as finalists to compete in this year's program. Two Boeing teams received Silver awards in last year's competition. The Clean Team received final presentation score sheets and feedback reports on June 19, 2008. The Clean Team received a total of 107.5 points for their presentation, merely 0.6 points behind the Bronze winning team. Only ten (10) of the twenty-six (26) teams scored above 100 points. The Clean Team participated as the only municipality amongst giants of manufacturing and the private sector. For a first year participant in a highly technical competition, the City of Miami Beach showed that quality of life issues can be just as complex, if not more difficult, to address and tackle as those of private industry. Even more meaningful in light of our efforts to foster team work and a "One Team One City" philosophy, the Clean Team was awarded the Attendee Choice Award for Team Spirit, an award defined by "exuberant demonstration of zest, tempo, and camaraderie." I want to take this opportunity to once again congratulate the Clean Team for a job well done, and for representing the entire City of Miami Beach team in such an outstanding manner.
