LETTER TO COMMISSION
April 24, 2001
TO: Mayor Neisen O. Kasdin and
Members of the City Commission
FROM: Jorge M, Gonzalez ~ ~/
City Manager
SUBJECT: Flagler Memorial Metal Fence
The purpose of this memo is to present the latest information concerning the construction progress
of the new protective/decorative metal fence surrounding the Flaglet Memorial. The following is a
chronology of events that have occurred or are currently underway in the ongoing plan for the
complete renovation of the Flagler Memorial on Monument Island.
The CMB Parks Maintenance Division has cleared underbrush and cut grass in a
substantially larger area that has been proposed for the new perimeter fence.
A more generous 'plaza' area is being developed. The old chain link fence was situated too
close to the base of the Monument. The new configuration places the fence away from each
side by thirty (30) feet.
· On the week of April 16, the support posts for the fence were being placed on the site.
· On the same week of April 16, the fence sections were transported by boat with the
assistance of a Public Works boat and its personnel.
® On April 24, the City's contractor began the welding of the fence panels.
· The fence, and gates, will take at least ten (10) more working days to completely fabricate
and likely to be completed, weather permitting, by the week of May 7.
· I will instruct Property Management to inspect the fence and gates on a regular basis'to
maintain the paint protection and to ensure proper maintenance, which will prolong its
longevity against the harsh natural elements of the site.
