Adopt the Resolution.
ANALYSIS
"Older Americans Month" was established in 1963 and, since then, every President has issued a
formal proclamation during the month of May asking that the nation pay tribute to the great
contributions of elders in their communities. This year, the U.S. Administration on Aging has
announced the theme for May 2001: The Many Faces of Aging, in acknowledgement of the promises
and the challenges posed by our rapidly increasing multi-cultural and multi-generational aging
population.
This year's theme is truly appropriate for Miami Beach. The city is a vibrant mosaic of many
different cultures and ethnic groups. It is home to a large population of elders and will continue to
be so as the baby boomer generation ages in unprecedented numbers. Our elder population continues
to contribute significantly to the community. The celebration of "Older Americans Month"
highlights the City's commitment to its older residents at a time when the City is seeking designation
by the Florida Department of Elder Affairs as an Elder Ready Community.
The Administration recommends that the Mayor and the City Commission adopt the resolution
establishing May 2001 as "Older Americans Month" in the City of Miami Beach.
