Our faculty of highly trained, professional musicians and educators have performed with the New World Symphony, the Miami City Ballet Orchestra, as well as other ensembles will provide the music instruction. The program is projected from September 1 ~`, 2008 to August 14"', 2009; funds from the city's Artistic/Cultural Educational (ACE) program, if granted, will only be used for expenses incurred for the program on or after October 1~`, 2007, and will be primarily applied to the after-school programs that serve a high proportion of local families. Registration will be open to all school-age children. In the probable situation that more students apply than we can serve, interviews will be conducted by our Executive Artistic Director, Carson Kievman, and one of our faculty members to assess the children's interest and inclination for music, as done for the Summer 2007 program. Only children who previously participated in the Music for Youth will be exempt from the interviewing process. Instructors will introduce musical principles based on voice, musicianship and one of seven instruments: guitar, piano, flute, violin, trumpet, bass, or saxophone. The curriculum addresses National Standards for Music Education for the appropriate age group. Some learning objectives also meet Florida's own Sunshine State Standards for Music according to grade level. The curriculum is built to be flexible and suited to children's diverse learning abilities, as well as to accommodate a variety of proficiency levels, previous experience, and knowledge of music. The program's teaching philosophy encompasses best practices based on educational psychology theories, such as intrinsic and achievement-based motivation, teaming by doing, active learning strategies, modeling, autonomy, and edutainment. Activity components for all youth include small group instrumental lessons, chorus, and musicianship class where instructors teach music notation and theory; additionally, the younger children will also interact with computer software that reinforces keyboard skills, music theory and appreciation. All youth will participate in "show-and-tell" performances and end of session concerts where the students have the opportunity to perform with and for their peers, as well as to see their teachers perform. Participation in the program is based on our assessment of a child's readiness, potential to gain from the program and any perceived talent, without regard to their family's financial situation to the highest degree feasible. During the fall and winter of 2007/08, our program has had 20-30% of all students on full scholarship and 40-50°r6 on partial scholarship. Our goal is to allow all children with free or reduced-price lunch eligibility at school to participate at sharply reduced rates (partial scholarship); to provide full scholarship to those who meet poverty criteria or have extenuating financial circumstances; and to charge only $400 per four-month semester to those who do not qualify as low-income. 6 of 10 The organization has developed and refined both after-school and summer music curricula and has a track record of effective teaching to youth, including at-risk youth. Our musical bank includes instruments and computer music software and keyboards. Our faculty have both top credentials and experience teaching youth. Our location in the city's Cultural Arts Neighborhood is accessible to all Miami Beach residents, where we have attracted participants from 25 zip codes across the county; alternate facilities will be utilized in the event that the city requests the program to be relocated. Project description as revised based upon the City Commission approved award: Based upon the City Commission approved award the Music for Youth program as stated in the grant will take place from September 8"', 2008 to January 17"', 2009; funds from the city's Artistic/Cultural Educational (ACE) program will be used for expenses incurred for the program on or after October 1~`, 2007, and will be primarily applied to the after-school programs that serve a high proportion of local families. 7of10 Exhibit 2-A: Project Budget /Revised Total Project Budget Name of organization: SoBe Music Institute Date(s) of Project: 9/8/2008 -1/17/2009 Attach a copy of the total Project budget or list cash expenses and cash revenues specifically identified with your program, project or events.
