December is the time of year many Miami Beach residents leave this tropical-metropolis for a winter getaway. In addition to the crime prevention measures everyone should take while away from home — including locking all doors and windows, activating an alarm system and setting timers for interior/exterior lighting — MBPD encourages residents to take advantage of their courtesy watch order service. “This program entails dispatching officers routinely to check on the exterior of your home while you’re away,” explained Miami Beach Police Chief Daniel J. Oates. “It is intended as an additional layer of security, yet I stress that crime prevention always begins with each individual homeowner.” To schedule a watch order, which is available year-round, Miami Beach residents should call the non-emergency police line at 305.673.7900 before heading out of town.
