South Pointe Park Fountain to Be Named After Former Deputy Police Chief
-- In Memory of Miami Beach Police Department Veteran Mark N. Overton --
Miami Beach, FL – Today, the Miami Beach City Commission approved the naming and
installation of a plaque in honor of former Miami Beach Deputy Police Chief Mark N.
Overton at the South Pointe Park Fountain.
In March 2012, after 28 years of service with the Hialeah Police Department, Chief
Overton accepted a position in his hometown as the Deputy Chief for the Miami Beach
Police Department.
“Chief Overton will always be remembered and beloved in our community. He was a
professional who showcased the very finest values of our Department -- a man of honor,
integrity and dedication,” shared Miami Beach Police Chief Daniel Oates. “He loved
South Pointe Park, and placing his memorial there is an ideal tribute to his memory.”
Throughout his 32-year law enforcement career, Chief Overton received several career
honors and awards, including Officer of the Year, the Purple Heart, Combat Cross,
Distinguished Service, Outstanding Supervisor, and Administrative Excellence. In
January 2014, the Village of Bal Harbour appointed him Police Chief.
He passed away on November 3, 2016, but his remarkable legacy will continue to live on
in the South Florida community. The City of Miami Beach also proclaimed December 14,
2016 as Chief Mark N. Overton Day.
