For a sixth consecutive year, hundreds of volunteers of all ages will gather for a day of public service on Saturday, October 21 and give back to the community they love. In conjunction with the Miami Beach Fire Department, Dale, The Surfrider Foundation, Teen Job Corps, VolunteerCleanUp.org and the Miami Beach Regional Library, the City of Miami Beach will engage the community in philanthropic projects that enhance local parks, restore sand dunes crucial to the city’s unique coastal environment and transform schools into healthy and safe learning environments. Promoting environmental sustainability and productive learning, this free event introduces community-based services and resources to participants. “To the generations of individual’s involved, the special day promotes dialogue between the youth and senior citizens,” shared Director of Housing & Community Services Maria Ruiz. “This hands-on participation creates an opportunity for ideas to be shared, connections made and valuable public projects to be completed – inspiring continuous progress and perpetuating the spirit of our great city.” More than 400 volunteers are expected to gather from all areas of Miami-Dade County and pitch in to improve the Miami Beach community. The free event will take place at North Shore Open Space Park, 8101 Collins Avenue, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Projects include the following:  Dune & waterway restoration  Intergenerational activity  CPR training  School beautification projects  Removal of damaging non-native plants  Picnic bench restoration  Homeless outreach  Free fingerprints for children  Blood Drive We are committed to providing excellent public service and safety to all who live, work and play in our vibrant, tropical, historic community. Volunteers will each receive a free T-shirt courtesy of the City of Miami Beach, a free water bottle compliments of Coca-Cola and a delicious lunch from Pizza Hut. All volunteers are eligible to receive three community service hours in exchange for their time. Several prizes and giveaways will be awarded based on donations given. A portion of the event will focus on educating the public about the importance of educational achievement, school attendance and will offer parenting tips, resource lists, and referrals to community-based programs. In addition, the event will offer information on the many services available in Miami Beach, including: job training, counseling, youth development programs, truancy prevention initiatives, educational support, health care services, the IB education program, food banks, among others. The Miami-Dade Public Library System’s Bookmobile will be on site to encourage reading on board its Mobile Unit, as well as One Blood with their Big Red Bus. Additional sponsors include: Coca-Cola, Success University, Parent-Child Program, All Stars Program, The Children’s Trust, Zico Coconut Water and Hubert’s Lemonade.
