PROTECTING MIAMI BEACH HOTEL AND HOSTEL EMPLOYEES FROM
POSSIBLE THREAT OF ASSAULT OR SEXUAL HARRASMENT
- On first reading the Miami Beach City Commission unanimously approved a
measure sponsored by Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez that would
provide hotel workers a body alarm/ security button to be able to report
inappropriate incidents in their workplace -
Miami Beach, FL – Miami Beach could join the ranks of cities like Chicago and
Seattle by approving an innovative measure that would give more than 11,000
hotel workers access to a body alarm/security button. The portable emergency
device would provide an immediate and effective way for hotel workers to
connect to police and hotel security and management if they feel in any way
threatened or harassed during work hours.
“I ultimately want all hotel staff to feel they are protected and be able to report
incidents of sexual harassment without the fear of being fired,” shared
Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez. “I also want to commend my colleagues
for supporting the development of this necessary ordinance in our city.”
“This proposed ordinance recognizes that in the time of the #MeToo movement,
low wage, mostly immigrant women are unfortunately among the most vulnerable
to sexual assault at work. Arming hotel housekeepers, more than half of whom
report being victims of sexual harassment at work, with safety buttons gives them
some level of protection. We are grateful to Commissioner Rosen Gonzalez and
all the Miami Beach Commissioners for their unanimous support at first reading,”
stated Wendi Walsh, secretary-treasurer of Unite Here Local 355.
“The safety and security of our employees and guests is a top priority in our
hospitality industry,” noted Wendy Kallergis, President of the Greater Miami and
the Beaches Hotel Association. We look forward to working together this
upcoming year with Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber and the Miami Beach
Commissioners to implement the most protective and innovative product for our
employees.”
The next City of Miami Beach Commission meeting is scheduled for Wednesday,
July 25. If the ordinance is approved, it will take effect January 2019 and hotels

would also be required to place a designated sign on the inside of each guest
room door, providing information regarding the new measure.

- Esta innovadora medida implementada en otras ciudades como Seattle y
Chicago busca prevenir posibles agresiones sexuales -
Miami Beach, FL – De manera unánime, la Comisión de Miami Beach aprobó
en una primera votación la propuesta de la Comisionada Kristen Rosen
González de implementar un botón de seguridad portátil para los empleados de
hoteles y hostales en la Ciudad de Miami Beach. Esta medida de seguridad les
daría a más de 11,000 trabajadores de hoteles en Miami Beach una manera
inmediata e efectiva de reportar cualquier tipo de acoso o agresión sexual
durante horas laborales.
“Para mi es esencial saber que nuestros valiosos empleados de hoteles puedan
alertar a la policía y a los oficiales de seguridad cuando se sientan de alguna
manera agredidos en horas de trabajo. Además, que tampoco teman perder sus
empleos por reportar cualquier tipo de agresión a sus supervisores,” expreso la
Comisionada Rosen González. Ella también destaco, que se siente orgullosa de
sus colegas en la comisión por respaldarla en esta propuesta que busca eliminar
cualquier tipo de acoso sexual en los hoteles de la playa.
“Esta propuesta reconoce que en la era del movimiento #MeToo, mujeres de
bajos ingresos y la mayoría inmigrantes resultan ser desafortunadamente las
más vulnerables a acoso sexual en sus trabajos. Ayudando a las mucamas de
hoteles con un boten de seguridad las hace sentir más protegidas. Le
agradecemos a la Comisionada Rosen González y al resto de la Comisión de
Miami Beach por este apoyo unánime en esta primera lectura de ordenanza,”
dijo Wendi Walsh la secretaria y tesorera de Unite Here Local 355.
“En nuestra industria la seguridad y protección de nuestros empleados e
invitados es prioridad,” estaco Wendy Kallergis, Presidenta de la Asociación de
Hoteles de Greater Miami and the Beaches.“Este próximo año tendremos la
oportunidad de trabajar con el Alcalde de Miami Beach Dan Gelber y los
Comisionados para implementar un producto innovador para nuestros
empleados.”
Si la medida es aprobada, a partir de enero del 2019 los hoteles tendrían que
ofrecer a sus empleados los botones de seguridad y colocar una notificación
detrás de la puerta de la habitación con información respecto a la nueva medida
de seguridad.

miércoles, 25 de julio donde se llevara a cabo la segunda votación.
