Resolution 2019-30728 RESOLUTION NO. 2019-30728 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, APPROVING A BI- ANNUAL YOUTH JOB FAIR AT MIAMI BEACH SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL EACH SCHOOL YEAR, AT A COST TO THE CITY NOT TO EXCEED $1,000 IN FY 2018-2019, AND AUTHORIZING THE APPROPRIATION OF FUNDS FOR SUCH PURPOSE, SUBJECT TO ANNUAL BUDGET APPROVAL. WHEREAS, at the request of the City's Youth Commission, the City coordinated job fairs on October 5, 2018 and January 17, 2019, aimed at recruiting high school age youth for potential employment; and WHEREAS, approximately twenty-two employers participated overall, with several offering employment to Miami Beach youth; and WHEREAS, on January 30, 2019, the Youth Commission requested support to administer a bi-annual job fair for youth of Miami Beach beginning in 2019; and WHEREAS, to support employer participation, refreshments should be provided as the event will last approximately five hours; and WHEREAS, additionally, youth should also receive a take away to encourage participation; and WHEREAS, the Organization Development Performance Initiatives Department will facilitate the bi-annual Youth Job Fairs at Miami Beach Senior High School. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that the Mayor and City Commission hereby approve a bi-annual Youth Job Fair at Miami Beach Senior High School each school year, at a cost to the City not to exceed $1,000 in FY 2018-2019, and authorizing the appropriation of funds for such purpose, subject to annual budget approval. RECOMMENDATION Support the initiative to provide a Youth Job Fair at Miami Beach Senior High School bi-annually at a cost not to exceed $1,000. ANALYSIS At the request of the City's Youth Commission, the City coordinated a job fair aimed at recruiting high school age youth for potential employment on October 5, 2018 and January 17, 2019. Approximately twenty-two employers participated overall, with several offering employment to Miami Beach youth. Career Source South Florida Miami Beach Center partnered with Miami Beach to ensure a robust employer turn out and provided an employability skills workshop for youth as well. On January 30, 2019, the Youth Commission requested support to administer a bi-annual job fair for youth of Miami Beach beginning in 2019. The success of the fair hosted at Miami Beach Senior High in January 2019, will serve as the model for future youth job fairs. CONCLUSION To support employer participation, refreshments should be provided as the event will last approximately five hours. Additionally, youth should also receive a take away to encourage participation. Morales, City Manager 1 1 DATE: October 12, 2018 SUBJECT: CITY OF MIAMI BEACH YOUTH J•B FAIR On Friday, October 5, 2018 the City of Miami Beach hosted the First Annual Youth Job Fair at the Scott Rakow Youth Center(2700 Sheridan Avenue). Over 25 students from Miami Beach Senior High School and the Hebrew Academy participated in speaking to local businesses interested in recruiting high school age youth for potential future employment. This event began as a request by the City's Youth Commission. In a joint effort between Parks and Recreation, Tourism, Culture and Economic Development and the department of Organizational Development and Performance Initiatives, the City was able to secure several local businesses to set up booths with their recruitment information. High school students spoke to business owners, managers and other staff to gain valuable knowledge on the hiring process for future opportunities. The City of Miami Beach is pleased to announce the success of the event and is planning to host an additional Youth Job Fair in 2019.
