SUBJECT: Flamingo Park Tree Removal pdate
The purpose of this Letter to Commission s to update the Mayor and City Commission on the
tree removals conducted as part of the Flamingo Park Park-Wide Improvements Project.
Yesterday, Urban Forestry conducted a site inspection to assess the condition of the remaining
two Melaleuca quinquenervia within the park. Both trees showed substantial evidence of basal
decay and branch dieback which are illustrated below. In addition, these two trees are directly
adjacent to pedestrian walkways, park benches, and the basketball courts. Due to the extensive
decay and size of the tree parts which have a potential of failing, it is recommended that these
two trees be removed immediately, as they pose an imminent hazard to health, safety or property.
The area has been secured to protect the public until the contractor removes the tree safely. A bird's
nest has been identified in one of trees. Staff is working with Natural Resource Agencies to identify
the species and develop the appropriate action plan before removing the tree.
Both of these trees are already permitted for removal under UF2017-0195 and as such will be
mitigated for per permit requirements. Mitigation will be in the form of Florida Friendly Species suited
for our climate and will include 49 new trees comprising of(6) Gumbo Limbos, (6) Verawood, (10)
Bridal Veil, (5) Pigeon Plum, (6) Silver Buttonwood, (1) Orange Geiger, (13) Wild Tamarind, (1)
Live Oak, and (1) Mahogany.
City staff will be attending the neighborhood HOA meeting on Monday April 1st, 2019 to discuss
this topic among others for the park and to answer any questions regarding this project. The
meeting will take place at 5:30pm at the Tennis Center at Flamingo Park.
