SUBJECT: INDIAN CREEK DRIVE FROM 6 ° STREET TO ABBOTT AVENUE ROADWAY
IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
The purpose of this Letter to Commission (L TC) is to provide information on an upcoming Florida
Department of Transportation (FOOT) roadway improvement project on Indian Creek Drive from
53rd Street to Abbott Avenue .
The project scope consists of milling and resurfacing the existing pavement, repairs to existing
sidewalks, curb-ramp improvements, and signalization improvements.
The work is scheduled to begin May 27, 2019 and it is anticipated to last seven (7) months.
City staff recently met with FOOT to coordinate various on-going and upcoming roadway
construction projects affecting mobility in Miami Beach. As per the City's request, most of the work
related to this project will occur at night (Midnight -6:30AM). For the sidewalk repairs, FOOT has
agreed to conduct daytime lane closures during non-peak hours. In addition, the City and FOOT
have agreed to daytime lane closures in the non-peak direction. For example, in the morning,
when traffic is heavier in the southbound direction, the contractor will work on the northbound
lanes and, in the afternoon, work will only affect the southbound lanes since most traffic is
traveling north.
City staff will monitor travel time and congestion during the daytime hours and coordinate with
FOOT on any changes to the closure schedule. Further, traffic signal timing will be monitored and
adjusted as needed to mitigate impacts to traffic flow. The public will be advised of the upcoming
project and lane closures via the City's traffic text alerts and Digital Message Signs on major
thoroughfares throughout the City. Further, all project information will be displayed in the FOOT
interactive map of projects affecting mobility in and around Miami Beach (http://www.i395-
miami.com/miamibeachtrafficreport/).

The Florida Department of Transportation (FOOT) is scheduled to begin a
roadway improvement project the week of May 27, 2019. The project limits extend
along State Road (SR) A1A/lndian Creek Drive from 63 Street to Abbott Avenue in the
City of Miami Beach. The project will cost an estimated $1.3 million. The work will take
roughly seven months to be C?mpleted.
To build this project safely, it will be necessary to periodically close lanes. Work
will be done in stages to minimize impacts to the public during special events and peak
periods of traffic. The department will make sure traffic continues to flow safely through
the work zones.

To do this work safely, it will be necessary to close travel
lanes and establish detours at times. Lanes may be closed
during non-peak hours:
• 12 a.m. to 6:30 a.m., weekdays and weekends

zone. Wearing a safety belt is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle
crashes. The department takes steps to reduce construction effects, but you might experience the following around
the work site.
• Travel lane closures
• Increased dust and noise
• Workers and equipment moving around the area
