The Youth Commission would like you to be aware of the following motion requesting support for the
commission to participate in the Legislative Action Days Youth Council program, approved at the May
21, 2019 youth commission meeting.

Motion Text:
The Youth Commission requests the Miami Beach Mayor and Commission allocate the budget of
$5,000 for the Youth Commission to participate in the Legislative Action Days Youth Council
program to become educated about City government along with represent and articulate the
needs of youth within the Miami Beach community.
The Youth Commission urges the Mayor and Commission to support the above request.

Time: How Can We Be Heard? Obstacles and a Method
10:30 a.m.to
11:30 p.m. Youth will begin with a brainstorming session about obstacles that confront youth
in seeking to be heard on matters of public concern. Then youth will learn how to
run an Open Space meeting.And the meeting space begins,with topics and
discussion driven entirely by the topics youth want to discuss.
Time: Lunch
11:30 p.m.to Guest Speaker:
12:30 p.m. Commissioner Diane Williams-Cox, City of Tallahassee
Meal: Provided by FLC.
Time: How Can We Be Heard? Strategy Development Through the Open Space
1:30 p.m.to Meeting
3:00 p.m.
Driven by the youth's priorities and interests,the Open Space meeting will
continue.
Reporting Out: The Open Space Meeting Concludes
Youth will share their experience with their peers in a closing conversation
• reviewing what they've accomplished together.
Time: March to the Capital
3:30 p.m.to 4:30
p.m. Speak with your legislators* about the needs of youth in your local communities.
Program ends for the day, leave with your council from the capitol.
*Some legislators may not be available at this time.

Youth will attend a workshop at Florida State University titled `Choosing a
Major'. *
*All attendees must fill out General Release and Waiver of Liability
12:30 p.m.to On your own for lunch- lunch stop on FSU Campus **
110 p.m. (Chick-fil-A and Four Rivers)
**FLC is not providing this meal. Please bring funds.
Time: Tallahassee Community College
2:00 p.m.to 3:00 Walking tour.

Day 1 Chaperone Program:
For Day 1, FLC is preparing a special program for chaperones. From 9:30-11:30, chaperones are
encouraged to participate in a self-guided tour of the Capitol, Florida Historic Capitol Museum,
Supreme Court, and Museum of Florida History. These locations are all within a few blocks of
City Hall and all locations are free. The Florida Room(at City Hall)will also be available for
chaperones to use. At lunch, chaperones will rejoin the youth for lunch. After lunch,the City of
Tallahassee has prepared a special presentation.
Parking:
• The suggested method of transportation to get to/from City Hall/FLC is Uber/Lyft.
Kleman Plaza parking garage has limited parking and generally fills up by 8:00 a.m.
Parking in Kiernan costs $6.00 per day.
• For those who travel via bus,there is a loading zone located on College Ave for drop
off/pick up only.

Meals:
• A light, continental breakfast will be provided both days.
• Lunch on March 26—Fired roasted dressed chicken, steamed saffron rice, garlic potatoes,
steamed vegetable medley, garden salad, rolls, red velvet cupcakes. (Meal subject to
change)
• Lunch on March 27—Lunch will be on FSU campus (Chick-fil-A and Four Rivers)and
councils will be on their own for lunch. (FLC is not providing this meal.)
Hotels:
• Hotels fill up quickly this time of year, so please be prepared!
• Most youth councils travel and stay with their local elected officials. However, if you
need a list of hotels,please email Eryn Russell at erussell@flcities.com.
• FLC does not have a specified hotel location for councils, so please choose a hotel that
fits your council's needs.
Dress Attire:
• Business casual.
Additional notes:
• Please bring good walking shoes for Day 2. You may also want to bring an umbrella and
a reusable water bottle. Youth will be given a drawstring bag to use on Day 2.
• Encourage your youth to take pictures and post them on social media with the hashtag
#FLCityYouth.
• Instructions on FSU Waiver: FSU requires minors to fill out a waiver to participate in
their workshop. Please use the following language when filling out the waiver: "...I state
that I am voluntarily participating in FSU Career Center's activity, Choosing a Major
Workshop on March 27, 2019 located at the FSU Career Center."
